Found two today and would like to get some opinions. Both suger maples. First one is on the big side send one is a little smaller. Getting to late to dig since the leaves are coming out now but would like to start marking some trees for next spring. Would be doing a trunk chop on both.

Sugar maples have gigantic leaves and likely long internodes. So it not likely to work out well. On the other hand, I've had great fun growing Norway maple seedlings and have not had these expected problems.

IMHO, much of the fun in bonsai is experimenting --> go for it and keep us posted on how it goes.

I've actually read a pretty good article about maples recently and when it came to suger maples it was the persons opinion that there not used much for bonsai but thought they should be. They said they would make good medium to large bonsai. I already have one potted for this year that may end up 3-4 feet tall when done. I'm fine with using a suger maple for a larger bonsai which these would be just wanted to see what people thought about the trunks.

That's what I'd have said. I've seen a few (very few) Norway maples that looked nice, but sugar maples and sycomore look like complete non-no. I think it's a waste of time...

Both trunks look like good beginnings, but if you want to make bonsai of them I think you need to target keeping them under 36 inches --> think 30 inches tall; else I think you will be making a patio tree. :(
