When is the best time to collect Yamadori, and is there a better time for different species?

I live in The Netherlands and i want to collect a pinus tree. At my last attempt i succesfully collected a birch tree but the pinus i also collected didn't make it (maybe i cut off to much green or roots).

If i need to collect in spring, what are the signs i have to look at (candles?) and how far can i cut the branches / roots of Yamadori? And also how early can i safely do collecting?

A pine tree should be collected in spring when you know that there will no longer be frost. You also don't want to cut branches off, unless you need to to get it in a car or something. With a pine, I find that it's best to get as much roots and foliage as you can.

Just like Giga said, lots of roots and foliage are important for survival on conifer. The best time to collect depends on a few factors. I generally collect in fall or early summer. The reason being is that the roads are closed because of snow fall during late winter/early spring when I normally repot. If you can get to them in late winter/early spring that would be a great time. I recommend starting with either fall or late winter/early spring if possible. I do know of successful collectors who collect at basically anytime of the year, however that's not a great place to start.

Try to read Walter Pall articles on that topic. You can find them on his blog. Here is the link for one of them. You are from Europe so recommendations fits your climate. It is definitely good starting point.
