Hi,

Im beginning a bonsai Journey with this prunus serrulata kanzan. I got this one with an interesting base, and it felt like it had a lot of potential. However, im not quite sure where to prune it. It like to remove the tallest branch at the base completely, as it had no other branches that are of any use, its too tall. But im afraid the tree might not survive it..

Any ideas how to handle this? Or should the tree be able to stay alive? Im not planning on any other (heavy)pruning the following years.

First things first put your tree outside. If it’s been inside start with a couple hours of sun per day and slowly increase to full day over a couple weeks. Flowering cherry likes full sun, outside. Then on this site under account details enter your location and/or USDA zone. Then others can give advice based on your location. Put that tree outside ASAP though and water when the top 1” of soil feels dry when you stick your finger in it. Note the weight of the pot also. This will help you understand how much water is needed and when to water. On behalf of @sorce Welcome to crazy!
