Azalea contest 2020-2025

A quick question - dwarf Rhodos allowed? Since azaleas and Rhododendrons are the same family / genus. :)

You sure you want to try a dwarf rhododendron? They are really slow growers. You should be able to find a good azalea to start with come spring.

I'm in. But you know, an azalea whip very much is "pre-bonsai" heck, it was sold to me by a bonsai vendor. But it is untrained. So if others allow, I will submit it.

I would think it would be ok. Your whip has nothing so you would be starting from scratch just like everyone else. We all will be starting from the bottom and working our way up.

Im in for this. Have not worked with azalea in a bonsai sense so this would be fun. If i dont like how it comes out, ill plant it in the landscape somewhere.

So I have not done any research into Azalea’s before. What are some species/ cultivar qualities that are desirable? Does anyone have a link to a place with good information? I’ve found places to buy and the American azalea society but I haven’t had the chance yet to see what info they have available for non members.
I have no problem needing to do research but I I’m lost right now on where to start

I have some 1 gal. potted azaleas I found in my late aunts’ overgrown garden plus an azalea shrub in my yard that needs to be removed for a new deck. In both instances can I chop and repot (root prune) in the early spring (PacNW) for my contest entry?

Azalea is one of my favorites. This just gives me another excuse for another plant, or two. I'd be game.

Yes that is a good time. Provided you remove flower buds during pruning and the repot routine is suited to Azalea, being careful to retain finer roots closer to the base in particular. Provision of shade and maintain humidity levels will aid recovery. For the one coming out of the landscape a staged process will be advisable with a plan to reduce the root ball over time in successively smaller containers.

It‘s all a learning curve so what the heck, I’m in it to win it.
