Azalea contest 2020-2025

Sure, great idea, I’m in. But what about do you think about a couple specific starting size categories? This could matter a lot for development.
I‘m game anyway. But for example, I just got some 1 gal satzuki from Nuccios‘s that I stashed in the cold frame that ought to work fine, but wouldn‘t compare for starting potential (trunk, branch diameter etc) vs someone picking up a 3 gal from one of our local established nurseries. Cheers

Contest will be for 1 tree any size or style you prefer. This contest will test your skills on picking the right tree to branch placement to pot selection. If you feel your 1gal is up to it use that or if you're looking for something bigger have a look through the 3gal. You choose what you think you can work and do something with. Posting will begin the start of the new year.

So I have not done any research into Azalea’s before. What are some species/ cultivar qualities that are desirable? Does anyone have a link to a place with good information?.
I have no problem needing to do research but I I’m lost right now on where to start
where can I find information about what cultivars “trunk up” I’ve heard it mentioned around here a few times that some do it a lot better than others but that is not commonly advertised information when looking up Azaleas

Curious on what this tree would sell for in Korea.
Great tree can’t even imagine a price here with shipping and other fees.
I think this one is about 2000 USD but don't quote me on that. Good trees sell for top prices but this would probably go for double that in Japan.

Haha well it has a nice trunk and nebari so if I don’t kill it with my lack of skills lol I think it has a chance.

Very true everyone has equal chance but only 1 winner 😱

Good luck everyone

Well technically there will be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd by way of voting here. I'm hoping others will donate winner prizes to congratulate 5yrs of dedication.

The secret i meant is you have to ask Bill and Jim the right questions so they can take you to the back and grab a tree that they use for there mother plants ;) ...keeping it alive and thriving is no problem for me ;) not killing with lack of bonsai skills (ive only been at this 2 years but ive been growing stuff my whole life) is what i meant. i might over hack it, or cause dieback which i hear is a problem with azalea's or take too much off the roots who know's?! haha but ill try my best not to kill it
