Azalea contest 2020-2025

What's the point of arguing about colors? I don't even know what will be available at the local places anyway. Would you rather me not look forward to your idea?

Who's arguing? I'm just letting you know if you go out looking for an orange evergreen you won't find one.

Hence the whole purpose of this is to learn...….orange does not exist in evergreen azaleas.

So what is meant by "no pre-bonsai"? Wouldn't these all be considered prebonsai as they aren't in training? Or is that meant to specifically refer to stuff already in training?

Me personally.........pre-bonsai is a plant/tree that has been looked at and has had the initial movement/style of the tree determined. Branches have been removed and trunk/remaining branches have been wired in the pre-determined style. Roots have been somewhat reduced or worked on. Basically the plant/tree has already been worked on and is now in the initial stage of becoming a bonsai.....pre-bonsai.

With this contest one goes out, gets what looks like a bush/basic plant and initiates this process.

This leggy lady is growing under the deck in my backyard. Azalea?? If yes, count me in!

Yeah, but with it being a contest it's best to have the rules set before we begin. Thanks for asking that question.

I wouldn't mind having a yearly vote. Maybe "most improved", "best of the year", etc. Obviously the 2025 vote for best tree will be the gold medal, but it would be good to keep everyone involved over that period of time. Just a "IMHO".

@Adair M if want a little drive from you try Kennemore nursery in Cumming. They still carry a few varieties of satsuki and krume.

A quick question - dwarf Rhodos allowed? Since azaleas and Rhododendrons are the same family / genus. :)

Botanically there is no "bright line" separating azalea from Rhododendron, they are all Rhododendron. There are a number of species and hybrids that can be put in either category. I would have no problem allowing Rhodies. Granted, the idea is bonsai, so "big leaf" Rhodies are not a good choice.

@Leo in N E Illinois you interested in participating with your azalea whip?

I'm in. But you know, an azalea whip very much is "pre-bonsai" heck, it was sold to me by a bonsai vendor. But it is untrained. So if others allow, I will submit it.
