All aboard the Mugo train!

Oh it was 100% joke.

I could only find after July in the Lazylighting thread the other day.

Then Mike comes with the chop.

I got confused! And Im itching to work, Safely.

No fighting on the Mugo train, unless you wanna deal with the Conductor.
Or the engineer.

Not me!

Don't make me come back there !

I knew but was waiting around for what I don't know.
It doesn't take long to hack off a bunch of foliage. You have to be careful and watch how much is on a limb you want to cut off. Versus the amount of limbs you think should come off. One limb can have a quarter of the foliage.

Yes. They are all very close.

I want to leave at least one weak branch, because it has nice movement down already, and a wiggle.

I'd like to leave the healthiest ones to keep it growing and heal the eventual knuckle cuts.

Far as defining a Trunkline......
That's gonna take a while!
I really need to dig in there to find one.

The trunk line needs to be in your head too. You need to be able to visualize how a branch will grow and how it will look in the future.
These aren't elms that can be a stump one year and three years later ramification of small branches is being done. It looks like the pines are long haul trees. But once you get one there they are way cool. I didn't know how cool pines, all pines were until I saw some pine bonsai in the flesh. Now I have 4 different kinds in development.

Yes, I was under the impression that major pruning was done in july, but minor trimming could be done any time.

Ah hell! You can cut a limb off of a tree almost anytime it's growing. I don't know if Vance will say it's ok to go at the roots in July or not but if the tree is doing fine at that time I'm sure he will. He usually waits to do everything to his trees at once. He likes to tend to the roots first. Like he should. I don't think this tree is rootbound enough to give it the Vance Wood treatment yet so I went ahead and got in there and did some pruning now.

I just bought another one. It jumped into my truck and said: "Take me home!" I swear it did.

I cant post pics now, but I will do so as soon as I can.

If you want to see a mugo with a trunk, stay tuned. I am not kidding.
I can't ever stop at a nursery without something hitching a ride.

This is a very good and promising tree. If I had encountered it I would have scooped it up in a miniute.

I am not suggesting that you do such a thing but just for the information: If you were to remove the bottom branch on this tree and you did not leave a substantial stub, you are likely to kill part of the trunk and create a Shari you may not want or particulary need. I have been hear and paid the price for acquiring this bit of information.

No worries Vance, I plan on keeping a 2 inch or more stub. It was suggested to me that I use it for a jin because the resulting scar will be large otherwise. I had already thought of that as well.

I am going to try and age that branch and see if I can get an estimate on the tree with proportionate size with the trunk.

BTW this was purchased from New England Bonsai Gardens. It wasnt a bad price either considering its size and obvious age. I paid at least 1/4 to 1/5 what a similarly sized JBP would have been.

Probably because; still, most people are afraid of the Mugo Pine. It's a good find and I have high hopes for it. Did they give you any ideas of what to do with it or when you might do it? Just curious. Up until a couple of years ago the Mugo was not much of an item in most bonsai nurseries.

I was there for the class I am taking. I showed it to John Romano and asked him what he thought. He did mention the different repotting time vs JBP. He said to jin the big branch because the scar would be rather large considering. He said it would take a while to develop but he did indicate some of the back buds on it. He did say it was old because they take a long time to bark up and this one was starting to do that. He said he thought the tree was worthwhile for the price. They have a quite a number of them from 6 inch pots up to the two I purchased from them (3 gallon pots).

You did good and John did good in
My newest Mugo. Told ya it had a trunk! Obviously the low branch on the right will need to go at some point.

them.

This Mugo started out as a tree almost identical to the one you have.

Vance, How much is too much to prune off a Mugo right now if I don't do any root work? I know I am pushing the boundaries in my zone. Went up to visit my sis in Kennesaw and saw a neat little Mugo in a nursery there. mugo1.JPG

I didn't know mugo grew in Florida, I thought they were more of a colder species on a whole? Also That mugo is only cool if you got a trunk line in there!

I would limit the removal to 50%. You could probably do more if the removal was even and balanced and did not involve favoring one portion of the tree over the other to the extent one side of the tree is decimated.
