All aboard the Mugo train!

Now we're filling up the seats on this here locomotive! I know there are more out there too. Don't be shy. You saw the tree I opened up this thread with. Nobody's tree can possibly be worse than that one.

I have two, they are just little 1 gal starters. I will put em up ASAP it got really busy the last couple of days.

I am humbled and glad. Of course you all realize that these trees right now don't seem to show a lot of promise to a lot of people, hell; they don't even look like a decent tree. But Mugo bonsai is like sclupture. When you start out you most often are faced with a slab of stone and an idea. With a Mugo you find a piece of material that has everything every Pine bonsai you every saw has ----and I mean all of them, every branch and every twig all of them. It is now up to you to weed out the bad ones and keep the good ones so that in the end you have a first rated bonsai or at least a PG. rated bonsai.

I purchased two “Slowmound dwarf” specimens last year for about $14 each by mail. I slip potted them into diatomaceous earth, pumice, and pine bark. I’m feeding them with Osmocote 14-14-14. In early March 2015 as the buds were swelling I pinched the clumps to reduce them to pairs.

In July 2014 I did heavy pruning to decrease the density of the mops and to select for the better branches where more than 2 or 3 had sprouted.

Find something with nice trunks and go for it. Recducing these guys down to a bonsai is the major trick. You have to learn to see the bonsai inside the tangle of branches and stuff. Not what you want to see but what it actually there. You've done well, don't give up.

Can anyone tell me why this thread, now two pages deep, has never shown up in the New Posts tab? If you didn't think about Pines enough to go to the Pines section you would not even know this was going on. This has been a thorn in my side for a while. I have come to find out that some post have slipped by me because of this issue and there used to be a tab where you could make those observations to the people that can do something about it. I don't see an option for that anymore.

I recently did some nursery reconnaissance and found these big mugos can be had for about $70 each.

I think I would have to get one of those if I had the money.

It does make the list, the problem is there are SOOOO many other posts elsewhere afterwards, it gets moved down the list. We really have alot of activity here, particularly in the 'General Disscusion' and 'New to Bonsai' section but not as much in the 'Pines' section or in the other tree specific boards. This is why MFray kept bumping the thread because he wanted to make sure it stayed high in the list so you would see it. While it is good to check at the new/recent posts link (which I usually do first), you cant just rely on that. I make it a point to also visit the boards that I have specific interests in like Pines.

They are coming up in the world and people are beginning to take notice. The one I bought this year was from New England Bonsai Gardens in Mass. They are well known on the east coast and as far as Im concerned a top notch bonsai seller. They dont sell junk trees.

If anyone wants to try to say the two trees I posted in this thread are no good, well they will hear it from me how wrong they are. As you said, they have everything every other pre-bonsai pine has. I see more than a few others posted here that are just as good as well.

Viva le Mugo!

I hate to disagree with you but I just this moment went and checked 6 deep in the New Post tab/thread and it does not show, or it does not come up on my computer. Neither do I get notifications of the responses on the thread which I obviously have been posting to.

It's about "F"ing time.

Nice finds. What Mugo variety is this one? I haven't seen anything this large in our local nurseries.
I forget! I took a lot of photos but wholly forgot to include the mugo tags in my shots.

How'd you know? By the way, very nice Mugos you have.

He shouldn't have had to bump the thread. It did not show up on the new posts tab. As I told you I went back six pages deep and checked it did not occur, or at least it did not occur that I could see. Still does not. What parameters must be met to be placed on that list?

Across the top of every page is a menu bar. You click 'Forums', then you select 'New Posts'. You get a list of threads with new posts since the last time you clicked 'new posts'. If you never read anything, the list just get longer and longer. If you want, you can click on the words 'mark all threads read' at the upper right side of the page. This will erase the list. The next time you click 'Forums' + 'New Posts' you will get only a list of threads that have new posts since you marked all threads read.

The left side of the list has the avatar of the member that started the thread. Your avatar will be overlaid if you, at some time, contributed a post to the thread. Click the bullet or title and the first unread post in that thread will appear. On the upper right side of every page are the words 'Watch Thread' which will alert you when there has been an addition (by someone other than yourself) to the thread - you can choose email notification if you want; else you get a little red alert flag.

If you see a little red flag above 'Alerts' on the right side of the menu bar, just click it (= 'Alerts') and you can see a listing of who liked a post of yours and what that post is, who quoted you in responding to a post and what post that is, and including any addition to a thread you are following.

Because once you read or post in the thread, it is no longer new to you and it gets removed from the list so it will no longer show up until someone else posts in that thread.

Also as Osoyoung pointed out, you can set it to 'watch' certain threads and it lets you know when a new post is made by someone else.
