Acorn to Oak Tree Contest Rules Discussion

Of my 40 Willow Oak acorns I’ve sown 30 for outdoor stratification and will be doing 10 indoors in the fridge. For the outdoor nuts I’ve seen a lot of pictures with them exposed, is that the best practice or should I cover them with a bit of soil?

I collected my acorns in a regional park with a lot of wilderness area. It seemed like about 1 in 5 trees had acorns. And, although I wasn't paying attention super closely, I remember seeing trees with acorns right next to trees without acorns. Given all of the rain we got last year I'll be curious to see if more trees have acorns this year since it's been pretty ideal growing conditions.

Irvine Regional Park? Lots of amazing live oaks there.

Here are my Konara Oak (Quercus serrata) corns.

I sowed some like this last year, but is it better to stick them point side down?

Cover them with soil, plus mesh to keep the squirrels out.

There's only one way to find out for sure if the acorns are viable.

I think they'll mostly grow just fine, but the grower should probably be more careful about pests affecting his seeds.

I've never seen a squirrel in Tokyo, but If one makes it to the 7th floor, it deserves my acorns.

You don't have squirrels in Tokyo? I thought there were species of squirrels that lived everywhere—they're basically just rats with more fur on their tails—but I guess not.

If there were squirrels in Tokyo, they would have no trouble whatsoever climbing to the seventh floor.

What do you guys think? I contacted the seller about the issue with the acorns, there are 2 acorns that clearly have holes where the weevils went in... this is the message I sent him, and the reply I received. I'm just going to leave negative feedback, as I think he clearly is going to continue denying that it was his mistake. If he "float test" them, where did the dirt on the radicles came from? I think he just picked them up from the ground or bucket he stored them and package them without even looking.

Good morning,

I open the package today to sow the seeds and they were all germinating in the bag and full of bugs. I would like either new seeds sent, or a refund. As the seeds are almost certainly not viable anymore. The seeds looked germinating but fine when I removed the paper, but when I dropped them on the desk the bugs started to come out from inside of them.

Good afternoon

I dont have a clue where those bugs came from since there are none in the bag of acorns I have now plus i float tested all the them and there were no bugs in the water .

Everyone of those is a live and growing a root , nothing wrong with them so just plant them , They will grow fine . Ive been selling acorns and seeds for 20 years on here

There's a squirrel park in Machida, but it's a zoo. I've never seen a free roaming one anywhere around these parts.
There are Tanuki and Hakubishi (palm civets) which are both pretty unusual I guess. Plenty of regular rats too.

Yep! A bunch from there (my kids like the railroad and the pumpkin patch), and my other place is Oneil Park. No shortage of acorns in either spot this time of year.

Yeah those acorns just look bad all together. The color is all wrong, they look like they were from a tree last season or something. I'd plant them and who knows, maybe they'll work? Also, it's super easy to miss those bugs if you have a ton of acorns. I collected a bunch last year, sorted them and went through and looked at each one individually. Put them in a bag and a week later found holes in a couple of them with living larvae. Where else would the bugs have come from during shipping?! Doesn't sound like he's willing to budge but IMO I'd probably even be a little pissed at a friend who sent me those for free.
