Acer palmatum sharp's pygmy [#07]

Thank you guys. I'm happy you guys are digging the new pot. Also thanks for the nice comments! I like this stage where you get to see some green but the tree's structure still visible.

There is something really wonderful about the simplicity of Japanese containers.

Is this one of the varieties that gets the hanging red flower clusters in early spring? I was at Bill's on Friday and he has several in bloom right now...one was shishigashira and I think the other was a Full Moon. I find the contrast between the fresh green spring leaves and the deep red flowers absolutely beautiful and must have one!

Hi Chris. Not that I'm aware. I know Shishigashira does bloom. As you say it is quite beautiful but Sharp's (at least mine) does not. However the leaf sheaths do provide some of that contrast as you can see in the pics.

Are congratulations in order Mach!?!?! I think I just saw Peter Warren post on facebook that this tree took "Best Deciduous"!!! Congratulations if that's true!!!!! :) To think, you weren't even going to show...

It wouldn't surprise me a bit. Makes me feel very lucky to be able to think of some of the talent we have here on the forum as friends, and mentors.

I got word from Brian (BVF) that Sergio did indeed take the "Best Deciduous" award with his Sharpes Pygmy! Big CONGRATULATIONS M5!!! :D A well deserved award!

Whoo-Hoo!!! Congratulations Sergio, that's very exciting! And well deserved, I'm so happy for you. :D

Not surprised at all with the news :)
Congrats Sergio! The display was incredible, and without a doubt the best looking maple there.

Guys what can I say? Thank you so much I really appreciate it. I was utterly shocked and taken by surprise. Ask Brian who sat next to me. I thought the overall the quality of the show was very high. People are definitely upping their game with some incredible pieces. It was humbling and an honor to be there.

I had the good fortune to spend this amazing weekend with some awesome people from BNut and many I met for the first time. So thanks to Brian (BVF), Fred Truck, Chuchin, Nomiyama, Amkhalid and Johng. Ray sorry I missed you man! Really an awesome experience just being there!

I also want to give a special thanks to my friend Brian Van Fleet for his guidance and insight on my display. I had sent him a pic of my set up about a week before show time. Together we decided to shift the tree to the left despite the potential risks. Yeah I know!! Stay tune because I will show you some pics of when I basically took it all apart!! I will also post a pic of the display as it was shown as soon as I'm able. Just got home from Rochester

Brian is a pretty selfless and insightful person. I and my trees are better for knowing him. He could easily be a wonderful teacher of the craft.

Looking forward to the photos, congrats again!!

I'm not surprised at all! Congratulations! It's nice to such great resources on this site to pull knowledge from. It's refreshing that your so talented and humble at the same time. Again, well deserved and congrats.

About one week prior to exhibiting this tree, Brian (BVF) suggested that ideally a shift of the tree to the left of the pot would be a significant improvement. Before doing anything, I did a virtual to see what it would look like. I ended up liking the results very much and discussed with Brian if it was worth the risk. We decided it was! Brian also suggested to comb the roots out rather than cutting them back which was a much better way to go. It was late summer with a heat wave hitting New Jersey and just a few days before show time! Yes… no doubt perfect timing!!

I told Brian not to worry. If the tree died it would only be his fault!! :D So with everything to loose but even more to gain I proceeded with the operation.

This is what my display looked like. At this point the only major task left was to apply moss. As you can see the tree is centered in the pot.

And this is what it looked like about 5 minutes later!

Combed out the roots on the left so that I could move tree over in the pot.

About 15 minutes later "Operation Pygmy Maple" had been completed. The tree now sits to the left. The effect is subtle. This creates a nice negative space to the right of the tree and the composition looks somehow more "considered".

And this is what it finally looked like at the 4TH US NATIONAL EXHIBITION.

Detail of accent plant.

Also I want to mention that I was honored to meet some big names in the business throughout the weekend. Even better was to have some greats like John Romano, Colin Lewis and Boon to do a private critique of my tree. It was fantastic to get just 10 minutes with these guys.

I had the chance to spend a little more time with John Romano who had one of my favorite shohin displays at the show and one of the nicest guys around! Thanks John!

That was one ballsy move a week before the show! I'm glad it worked out, though;). By the way, I can't agree with you more about John R. Just about the nicest guy you'll ever meet...and he knows his way around shohin (and bonsai in general) as well as anybody.

Hey M, for some reason the before photo is not showing up? I would've had a panic attack, a couple days before the show! Yikes, you are brave, but it paid off in the end.

I'm going to have to try to get to the next one, seems like an amazing experience.

Yes indeed a very risky move! This was not made lightly by any means. This is a game of inches if not fractions of them and anything can/will throw off a judge. But honestly I went there not with any expectations of winning anything but simply putting up the best display possible.

Yes what a delightful and down to earth person John is. I really enjoyed meeting him :o

Judy yes you should try and get there in 2016. The trip is so worth it!! The place was packed with "celebrities". Bjorn, Owen, Bill, Boon, Colin, John R, Peter W, Easterbrook, Suthin, etc, etc not to mention the exceptional show itself. WOW!

Sorry not sure why the before pic is not showing:( Hmmm it shows up fine on my screen.

Hey mach,

Again congratulations! Meeting you and Brian was proof that bonsai people are the nicest people around!

I've admired your work for years and your last minute adjustment was truly the mark of a professional. You deserve every bit of that award. I was absolutely in awe of your tree.

Can't wait to meet you again and to see what you have in the next USNBE!

All the best,

Aaron

The before pic wasn't working for me either, but now it is. The tree and display are beautiful. I hope to make 2016 as well.

Our club is very lucky to has john so generously involved.
