A few planned collections

Every ficus I have "sealed" has bled through everything.....
Glue , paste, and don't even talk about Vaseline.....I think someone came up with that to watch people's trees die.

No for those.

Yes for others.

Spraying ficus cuts with cold water stops the bleeding.

I never remember.

Mostly because they aren't really "bleeding" to begin with.

I am happy with the way smaller wounds heal without sealant. Perfect.

The large ones seem to need "assistance".

I have a few larger cuts to make to tidy some roots. I will try to remember to spray it. And take notes!

Ive been seeing a lot of conflicting info on the use of sealant on tree wounds.

I was going to start a new thread but figured the suggestion to seal the wounds came here. Shigo is referenced as the prime source as to why sealants should not be used, however I see a lot of suggestions in the forums and how to's that suggest sealing wounds. I was also just reading a a thread on ficus and one on azalea, the ficus would dehydrate if not sealed and the inside of azalea will rot if not sealed (which actually looks pretty cool since it seemed to survive with that rotted/dried out section). My feeling is that this might be like 9mm vs .45.

Are there any particular instances where it is certainly suggested to seal wounds like with ficus? I'm thinking towards the transplants in spring, so this would be for the previously named species.

I'll continue to search more but any input is always appreciated.
I recommend sealing the cuts on any deciduous tree and the azaleas. For the ficus, I'd light it on fire...:D

Wonder if they smell like fig newtons when you're cooking them?
I take it you don't likus the ficus. I've never had one and never will.

Ficus are ok if you live in southern FL. The ones I'd want to have would be almost too large to move every time the weather got cold. Give me the trees that can tolerate 100 F and 20 F, all in the same year and in the same spot in the yard.

Not to be a smart mouth, but how does a guy in pennsylvania know of a tiny nursery in an even tinier town in sw Ga.

Funny - I have done business with them on several occasions in the past 3 - 4 years by phone and e-mail. I have received quite a few fruit trees and Bald Cypress all bare rooted, healthy, and well packed. I do not recall ever paying more then 12.00USD for 3 -4 foot tall rooted cuttings. On Fruits I always call to make certain they don't send grafts but not even sure that is needed for the items I have purchased. Olives don't do well here but they are pretty much expensive anywhere on the East Coast, not certain why. All I can say is they always have taken care of my orders properly and for what I consider a fair price. http://www.tytyga.com/. Tiny town indeed - if I recall there is well under 1000 people there  I have been up and down the East Coast many times and could have driven right though and not noticed!

hey
grimlore, I'm glad you've had success with them. It was 4 or 5 years ago when I bought the olive. It is healthy and doing well. Sloooowww to thicken even with our summer heat. I may try them again in the future. There were several other complaints from a few other locals that I spoke with, maybe it was just a rough day at the nursery during that stretch of time. Thanks.............SK
