A few Chinese Elms

I like the first one with a slight slant to the trunk. I am more drawn to such than a formal upright. And LOVE the character of the other. So...pine tree look with it. That's an aspect I've not seen...but I've not looked real close at the styles they do with them. But hey, it is out of the box feeling go for it I say. Is this for the Mame contest?

the 2nd is my favorite of the two :)

on the contest.....maybe I didn't get them for it specifically but the more I've been looking them over I just might

StoneCloud,

the first is naturally beautiful, I would thin out the branches and just grow.
Look at the roots later on.

The second, I would allow the damage to heal before anything else.

Elms, correct ?

Use the roots when repotting for new trees to learn from.
Good Choices, great potential.
Good Day

Yup elms. I will do that! I love more trees :D:D

Thank you @Wilson !

They are growing so quick especially with the last 5 straight days of rain we are having (still raining)

I am entering the tree in the Red Pot in the Mame Contest.

The one in the green pot........I want to try a Bald Cypress Style on it. I've never another species and styled it like a BC so I wanted to try. Not 100% confident but going for it!

Thoughts are more than welcome!!

On the 1st one, I would be inclined to get in there and clean out the branching. I would remove everything growing straight up or down and then remove the ones that are too thick for the crown, crossing branches etc.

I've been waiting to get started! Been raining for a week now and I was also holding off on doing anything to it before the mame contest parameters were set up. I didn't want to DQ my tree, haha

With all this rain the canopy has exploded and is calling for a good prune!

I have been thinking as well to maybe even go as far as remove everything but the Primary branches I want to leave. There are a lot of overly twisted branches some forming almost full circles haha.

Do you think this would be too drastic? Tree needs to be finished in 3 years.

Thanks!

That's exactly what I did to one not too long ago. My wife bought me one of those 3 tree groups from Bonsai Boy for my birthday last year (she didn't know any better). I left it alone long enough for her to forget about it and then I separated the 3 trees this spring and threw 2 of them away. I kept the best one and removed all unwanted branches and cut the remaining branches to stubs. I would do the same thing to yours.

This weekend (as long as nothing else comes up) I'm going to put some real work into it.

Today I took back runners, and most unwanted branches. I only had a few minutes so didn't get too involved.

Here is the tree after one cut back from the photo I previously posted in this thread, and before today's work:

And after today's work:

Still going to get rid of everything but the primaries but figured I would share pics along the way!

Stone...

Not the end of the world....
But I would try to cut it back in one sitting.

At least on the first go round...
It's easier to manage\balance emerging growth if it's even.

Well Thought out, different timed pruning for branch development can be used later..*

But now....when you go to prune again...
(Your major path setting prune) ....
You're going to be working around a bunch of delicate New growth...

New growth...
Which will be bigger no matter what, since it's had longer to grow.*

You might find yourself needing to cut that new growth again...
Or accidentally knock it's off....
Both weakening your tree.

Of course...it's Florida...
But you got a contest to win!

I'm going to as well, and I love how you handle the gift LOL !!!!

This sunday I'm hitting it hard in one sitting. I do get stuck in overthinking and like you said "well thought out pruning" a lot.

Thank you as always for your advice and direction bro! I don't always make the smartest decisions but I try!

Maybe I'm crazy? idk!

And yes There is a contest that must be won!!!!! :D

Regarding FLORIDA:

My elms are pushing new growth at a rate of about 1/2 an inch every day right now. I have been pruning them every 2 days or so. They have not slowed one bit.

My Ficus are RIPPING! One inch long new aerial root on one of them. The other has 4 new "nubs" about to root out of trunk. I just repotted it less than 90 days ago and it's growing roots out of the pot and over the lips! When I go through and cut leaves off them, the next day I have new bud on that branch.

Although I'm familiar with a tree's energy and I know that what I am doing theoretically should be weakening them.....and yes I know it may be ok right now but in a few years they may croak but I doubt it.......

So I push the trees. But I've always been that way in life with everything, trying to push the limit (in a good way), always do more.

What I've found is if you lightly prune the tree regularly and the tree is fully healthy, and in a good environment, the tree doesn't even notice the work.

I've also repotted, hacked and wired trees all in one sitting without them skipping a beat. quite frequently.

Oh, on a Bougy......I bare rooted it, root pruned it heavily (all against the "rules" for bougy's) and it didn't skip a beat.

This climate is not normal. I personally hate the climate here but the trees love it. Growth over night regularly on trees, unless you are ruthless on some of these they get away from you in 2 weeks, some times less.

Only because my trees are not showing signs of slowing down do I work them hard.

From progressions that I see on the forum/online I'm guessing that this year I have already gotten more growth than other zones will in two years. Nuts!

Currently handling my 5 elms and reading Colin Lewis's, art of bonsai design, specifically his chapter on elms.
I wouldn't be sure what to say on yours though because of the extra parameter of 3 years deadline to reach.. kinda goes against everything we are trying to do with bonsai lol, being about patience.

For the most part I'd agree and hard prune more. Their growth will be prolific.
Looks as though, from your last pic, second from the bottom on the right branch (4th branch if counting from the bottom of the tree, upwards) is a rather large branch. Looks like it's the largest, which may throw the eye of balance as it should be the bottom branch if largest, but perhaps could stunt its growth and allow the bottom branchs to thicken quicker and balance out more.

Good eye great read brother! That is the one branch that has stumped me so far. I was banking on the bottom branches thickening but that is a gamble as you know......

Yes, 3 years is a quick turnaround and against the practice of patience. Doesn't help me entering these contests considering I already am impatient by nature!

I was going to remove it but then I would have to change the front of the tree. Turning it slightly counter clockwise from that pic above and making that thinner "crotch branch" growing from it the new one in that place....

Problem with that ---> There is no movement from that angle

The tree will show me in time I believe.

So I brought this one back a good amount and took off about 75% of what was there. I think I still want the canopy a little bit lower though. This is the tree being trained for the Mame Contest:

I have yet to apply wire, that'll happen over this weekend, hopefully.

Last photo above was June 16

Here it is a few weeks later on July 2nd:
