A Delivery to the Garden... 6 new large Crape Myrtles...

the shoots now are over 2' long!

Grimmy is grinning! Looking to be a great start! Was thinking of you this morning as I was soaking in three small Bald Cypress, test plants before replacing all we lost. Hoping for a good year followed by a few road trips for "real stock"... Will be heading your way if all goes good.

It took a few months to get these all cut down and for them to begin budding and growing...but we are on our way now!

They all have such great flare at the base!

Nice.

John what are the dimensions of these containers?
They look about 24" across?

Re-inspired!
Grew several Crepe myrtles years ago, I really love the species. These are some awesome Crepe's to start off with.
Loving the bases and good work so far.

Craig.

Awesome, they look great! When I first moved to Florida I landscaped for a while and used to throw these out by the dozen, kicking myself now! I'm always surprised at how fast they grow back out after being cut to a stump.
Keep up the good work!

It is amazing that it has been less than 1 year since receiving these trees and only 6 months since drastically pruning the first one... The first one pruned this spring(3rd photo) has been pruned 4 times during this growing season... I can see that there will be much wiring in my future this winter:)

Nice work! plus your pot and care makes the tree look all that more appealing.

Hi johng, these all look like they will turn out awesome. Great work so far!

I also have a question I was hoping you could help with. This year I'm experiencing some kind of issue with my crapes that I did not notice last year. It's happening with standard and dwarf varieties but some trees are worse than others. What is happening is that some of the leaves will turn yellow or red, almost like fall colors, and fall from the tree. Sometimes they also have some black spots or streaks. This has happened with older leaves and also with younger ones that grow to replace the ones that fell. This has been going on since probably early July. At first I thought maybe the trees were getting too dry before I could get home to water. A fungal issue was also suggested and this makes sense with the high humidity we've had this year. Do you ever notice anything like this with your crapes or have any idea what it could be? I could post pics if that would be helpful.

Fungus and mildew are common with CM. do you have them in full sun?

Crazy cool John! I love when they get that melty look to their lower trunk and base...

Thanks man. Yes, they are in full sun. I'll start a new thread with some pics so as not to gum up John's thread.

I do see something like this often on my CMs....more frequently on my dwarfs but occasionally on others as well. It has never been an issue so I have not paid it a lot of attention. I have been pushing these and several others very hard and I would guess that it is related some how. As you theorized it may also be caused by drying out. As my trees get close to time for pruning, I always have a harder time keeping them watered...often, in spite of my best efforts, they wilt frequently. CM leaves are pretty fragile so it may just be this process that causes the death of the leaves. I do not think what I see is any kind of fungus.

can I have one :p

Sure! just send your address to nochance@pullingyourleg.com and then wait patiently by your mailbox:)

I also see that you asked about soil mix...quality potting soil. ..I really don't think I could keep these watered in a course mix.

Once fall/winter gets here, I will post some photos of the branch development...it is pretty unbelievable for one year!! I suspect there will be more CM in my future!
