2023-2026 ROR Contest rules

I am a complete beginner I have been interested and absorbing what I can for a few years, and everything I can this year. Finally bit the bullet and have been hands on a few trees this year. My yard is overrun with P. virginiana that my housemates have been slowly hacking away at. I will be a year behind on the start but I may dig a couple this fall and mark a few to leave alone till spring and see if I can get an entry together. I do love rocks almost as much as I love trees. Growing up in the Colorado front range it was hard to not grow an appreciation for both.

I suggest you start by reading the contest rules.

Probably should be using whole names huh. Pinus would probably be better bonsai and closer to my interest which namely is evergreens, namely native evergreens I have grown up loving here in the Rocky Mountains. From what I have read he big broad leaves of my prunus will not reduce much at all and be goofy looking at scale. I walked the yard and there aren't any great options left. Couple stumps my housemates left may have been before they were chopped. Will be following, potential entry tbd.

When using the Latin names, you should always using the full name before you abbreviate it. Your readers will be able to understand the correct species you are talking about with context.

It is just like using abbreviations. Always spell it out first before using the abbreviation. For instance, if I say ABS I could either be talking about the American Bonsai Society or I could be talking about Anti-lock Braking Systems.

Hello, That's very interesting!
I have a project I started 2 or 3 years ago, could I entry that or should I started a new one/ones?
Are there limitations on the starting material besides species?

All the rules.
All the answers to FAQs in the posts below.

Projects to begin in feb 2023 or after, is how I read the rules of the game.

Thanks Leatherback, I was in doubt about "start immediately".
So you can start from seed/cutting/air-layer/pre-bonsai, but it must be attached to the rock on the run, during the comp. right?

Sorry didn't find the FAQ

I just want to start on the right foot with you guys, it seems nice to do something different like that just for the fun and experience.

I'm new to the server, but I'm in!
Just wanted to know better about the starting points allowed.

@Albas
Any starting material is fine as long as it has not touched a rock before february of 2023. Im not sure if that was explicitly stated, but that's what the consensus among the entries has been so far :)

Yes

Thank you guys so much, I'll start preparations!

Whelp I just recently got a collected apple at a club auction that I’m thinking of planting on/against a rock. I’ll start a thread on it. ROR placement anticipated for spring provided it survives the winter.
