2021: the three year bonsai time capsule

I love the sentiment, but would like to point out that the reinforced concrete door on that vault has started to slowly towards a closed state-of-being so be quick.

Note: Locking them away for another 3 years does NOT release you from the obligation to show and tell in this thread.
It’s all about as delightfully enforceable as the tree thread.

its so nice to see all of the follow up photos from the 1st page! 😂

#1, Ilex serrata. Purchased 10 years ago from Brent at EG in a 2 3/4”. I’m going for a chuchin-sized, fat triple trunk.

Ok, here we are 3 years later. Not much improvement. I remember an article in BT years ago where they reported to take one from a trunk to Kokufu in under 10 years. I don’t see it happening here. I did repot it this year or last year, wired and pruned it each spring, and am working to close the wound at the base. I have identified more or less 3 trunks to work with. Mostly I’ve ignored it the last few years.

#2, Japanese Red Pine, from seed. I started with 50, quickly down to 2, and now 1. Also around 10 years old.

Japanese Red Pine from seed. Each year I wire it and do some branch selection, adding another trunk section. I have not repotted it since maybe 2015, so I have to about dig it up every time I want to work on it. I am very happy with the trunk development and think at some point this will transition to a bonsai pot and be pretty nice to look at after just a little pruning and wiring. Still haven’t landed on a front.
