I will wire it soon, once sap is flowing a little more.

Trident seedlings planted through tiles, progression thread

I decided to go in the same direction you guys suggested. Took the snapshot of a video because I didn't take any stills. I'll wire that leader in a few weeks when sap starts flowing and it doesn't feel so brittle.

I made the chop last year when digging the tree to work the roots, and I intended to let it thicken a little more before I performed my first chop for taper. I haven't taken a low chop off of the table. @clem @Corrado the image you posted was my other consideration for a chop. Like I said...

Also, here's the other tree mentioned in the first couple pages.

This tree grew well last year and I'm trying to decide what I like as a front and where I would like to make a chop. I would like some input from you guys as to what you would do. I thought about just a low chop, but there is slight movement in the tree that could allow me to make a chop further up.

    Funky palmatum

Didn't get a chance to. It died shortly after leafing out. I didn't do an autopsy but it was probably a root issue. I don't think it was a pathogen because no other trees were affected.

For it to be an even pancake, it takes several repots with proper work. For root fusion around the base, you can have that begin in just a couple years. The second tree that I posted above will have a fair amount of that pancake nebari when I work it this spring, but it also has several roots...

    Trident saplings grown through washers

Here are two of my best that were grown through metal or wood tile. Both are three-five years old.

Pictures from a few weeks ago, tree was transplanted to another area in the yard and root grafts were removed. Grafts shown either by my finger or in red.

The more the merrier.. I have started a few just like this, but I have one tree in the middle of each that I plan to use as a single trunk after the all fuse. Maybe a couple triple trunks but we'll see. They're all pencil sized or smaller right now.

Here are two of the three graft unions on the root side. The look to be fusing nicely as well.

I haven't dug down but I will tomorrow and take a look. You make a very good point. @Conor I don't think I will ever beat Brian in anything bonsai related. Too much of an education and talent gap between us right now.

I just went back and re read your post and I believe that I initially misread it and then committed it to memory incorrectly. Oops!

Root grafts have grown well and could probably be separated now. However, I'll wait until next year to be safe. This is a close up of one of the outgoing graft unions. The picture is a couple weeks old and when I checked today it looked to be fully fused. Here are a couple shots of the tree...

    Square pots for deciduous trees

@Adair M While it could stand some faster growth for the apex and for the wound in the back, the roots are actually in pretty good shape. These are stills from a video so they aren't perfect but the root ball is already flat. The issue that I see with getting this one on a board, at least...

    Square pots for deciduous trees

Oval would probably fit the bill. I rotated it just to see the clearance before I repotted and there is 2-3" of heavy roots that would need to be cut back to fit, some of it on the surface and it would be hard to disguise. The large branch will be going, one of the small branches at the base of...

    Square pots for deciduous trees

In general, are there any rules to follow for using a square pot? I have a masculine trident maple whose current front is about 45 degrees from what I see as the best front. However, there is no way to rotate the tree in a rectangular pot without overpotting a lot, because the nebari runs to the...

    Trident Maple trunk binding questions

If you're thinking you might want a root over rock, you need to commit to it and bind the roots to the rock ahead of time. Either way is fine, but I doubt that it will adhere to the rock unless you force it.

    Grafting 101

If that's the case then I should be golden. They're all threaded through and wedged to the top and wired out so they get plenty of sun.

    Grafting 101

Sounds good to me. It's not anything more than a prebonsai at this point. I can always redo it next year if they don't take. But I'll try to remember and come back with am update later in the year.

    Grafting 101

@markyscott Well guess who did a few thread grafts a couple days ago and didn't expose the cambium? I wonder if it would be more detrimental to disturb the roots and expose the cambium at this point or to just let it go and see what happens.

    Grafting 101

If the cambium of a seedling being thread grafted isn't exposed, will the graft fail or will it just take longer to fuse? I would imagine that while it isn't ideal, it shouldn't hinder the graft.

Trident seedlings planted through tiles, progression thread

Ah, I see. I've not much experience with grafting but thread grafting is easy. I've practiced approach grafts with branches I've removed when chopping trees and I need more practice before I attempt it on a tree; I have a lot of trouble getting the groove right and then securing it properly...

    An unusual Trident

I didn't realize how big this one was until today. That rootball looks really happy. Is soil mix just APL?
