Well figured I'd kick this years thread off as I don't think there is one yet.
At the moment I have 4 trays of seed on the go and they are basically going outside in the day time with the propagator lid on and I bring them in before sunset and are being rotated on 2 heat mats or in the warm living room by night and so far I have germination in all 4 trays.

Anybody else already have some seeds up and going?

First up I have a bunch of Brachychiton rupestris that I collected from a street tree, I have 2 trays of these and they are doing well so far.

Next is a tray of Melaleuca styphelioides/ incana and the other half are Ficus salicifolia/abutilifolia. Only one side has germinated yet I thought it was the ficus but not so sure. Time will tell.

And finally a tray with 3 types of Kunzea in them. All are sprouting but hard to see in the pic. Should be K. baxteri/parvifoli/ambigua

Hopefully I can start plucking them soon and free up the trays as I have plenty more seed I can get in.

Did chinese elms indoors

I scarified them with sulfuric acid and stratified them for 120 days. This is the first year I have done them and I’m pretty happy with the results but they’re a pain in the ass with the acid and all. When I scarified them I did them in 3 different batches. One for 30 mins, one for 1 hour and one for 2 hours. Seems like the 1 hour in the acid is the best. You rinse them under cool water for 30 minutes after out of the acid.

I usually check my seeds in stratification every 2-3 weeks for mold and spray with peroxide and redo the paper towel and bag as needed. You need to wear rubber gloves when you do this as there is still sulfuric acid residual on the seed after all of that rinsing. Other than all of that shit, they’re easy!:p

I have a container with about 20 randomly collected maple seeds (dwarf red maybe, with quite a few random varieties from around the neighborhood that have probably all cross pollinated that are currently being cold stratified) that are in the refrigerator. I will be posting with pics when its time to set them out and, cross fingers, they germinate.

So behind the apartments where I live is what appears to be a large holly tree. I used to look the area over for baby Holly trees but never found any. I started a pot of juniper cuttings back in spring 2018 and had it under the holly tree. Recently discovered this little Holly had sprouted, living among the cuttings. So I've accidently started a tree from seed.DSCN7158 (2).jpg

I’m hoping to get some Purshia stansburiana, Cliffrose. To sprout for me. They grow in my area and think they look to have bonsai potential?

Yeah, loads of seeds going. Larch, tridents, zelkova, "random seeds I collected, such as birch, maple, crappy mirtle". All heavily dormant in their trays under the benches, as winter is not over yet. Actually.. It still has to really start; Not much more than a dozen frosty nights, only 2 frosty days so far.

So far I've had about 10 jacaranda seeds germinate and only a few have poked up through the soil. I also have a few hundred JM seeds split between three batches in various stages. Planted the first batch a few days ago and am awaiting sign of germination. Second batch just finished cold stratification and those seeds are wrapped in a wet paper towel awaiting germination before planting. Third batch has a few more weeks in the fridge before they're ready.

Decided to go all in on ramping up my seed germination skills this winter and in the middle of the scarifying game. I started with maples, elms and some dwarf JBP, stored next to the Cottage Cheese!
Followed up with the first wave of supplies. Then I found a couple reasonable seed sites online.... my favorite with the most varieties interesting to me was in Canada.... and I just got the last order in .... I think I’ll try 1/2 of each and see what comes up! Looks like I will be busy for the next couple days! Wish me luck!

I've got some trident seeds I bought + some collected Japanese maple (small leaf deep red variety?) in the fridge since mid-December.
Also some mugo pine seeds that came as a free bonus with my trident order. I'll probably get them started soon-ish.

Didn't plant anything new this year, still have a lot of Maples seeds that did not germinate the last year, so im hoping they will do this spring,
The only new addition is Acer Griseum and Acer Triflorum - i started stratification in 2018, they went through warm, cold and warm again, planted them outside in November to get another cold fase, i hope some will grow.

Best of luck to all seeds growers :)

When PO opens tomorrow I have Jezo Spruce, Manchurian Apricot, Paperbark Cherry and Princess Persimmon seeds. Also collected several Ginkgo seeds.

Just ordered some trident maple, hawthorn, crab apple. 😉
