I Likeus the Ficus

I love the trunk! Awesome! I have a other species Im trying to do something very similar but mine is ten years or more behind yours. Great tree!

UPDATE:
Well the heat of summer is upon us in the Heart of Dixie, upper 90's with 200% humidity. While most other trees have slowed down, the ficus have really picked up, they love this kind of heat. So, I took a break this afternoon and gave this one a haircut and a little wire. Here what I started with:

I pulled some of the lower limbs down, again, since they did not stay positioned from the last wiring. Here is how I left it, what do you think?
It's looking really good. I always see Stacy cut the leaves in half to let more light in. Would that be appropriate for this one? I'm going to do it to mine this weekend.

I don't know, I was leaning toward completely defoliation, but chickened out. I might try the leaf cutting sometime down the road.

Update:

Got a break in the rain this afternoon, we got over four inches the past few days, so I took some time to give the tree a little trim. It has been less than a month since the last trim. The rain and heat are really helping the tropical.

Defoliate it. I have done this to all my ficus, with great results. Leaves reduced down nicely.

Update:

It got another haircut and some wire, plus 9652874256621 guise wires. Some of the larger limbs I notched on the bottom before I moved them. I have found that this is the best way to get them to stay in position as I have wired them into position in the past, when you take the wire off they will return to the original position in a matter of days. It still needs more wire, but that will wait till next season, I am running out of the brutal heat that it likes. Still have a month and a half, but will hold off.

I have been slowly chasing the growth back and reducing the height, it is about where I want it. What do you think?

Oh, sorry for the crappy photos, it was a little dark when I got home from work. Too dark for no flash and not dark enough for flash. And, the white cup is there to help an aerial root make it.

Very nice ficus
If you wire the branches of figs in the normal way allow the wire to bite. The tree then attempts to heal the wirebite and that growth helps to set the branches. When you remove the wire the scars will very quickly heal over and at the same time give the bark a nice appearance of age.

Thanks, Milly, I have done that on smaller branches, say pencil size, but the larger ones do better when notched.

Nice ficus you have there

Thanks!

Do you plan to shorten the canopy a bit more? It looks like you have already shortened it a few inches. The last picture has an almost half circle type shape but you usually see an umbrella type shape with this style of Ficus. Just an observation on an already nice tree.
