Moving Trees into Full Sun

Finally the time has come, closed on the new home and I will be bringing the trees back from the apartment this Saturday.

Questions. Since the trees have spent spring and most of summer in an area that barely gets any direct sunlight, should I bring them under shade cloth and slowly move them into direct sun? Can I move some of them into direct sun right away? Below is a list of what I have. I think the BCs, JBP and trident may be ok to move into full sun, but I am not sure about the others.

I think both JBPs and JRPs , and the junipers will be fine jumping into the sunlight; not quite so sure about the pomegranate and and ginkgo but mine are always in full sun.

I bet the sun in TX is bigger! Do you have an east side of the house or fence you could utilize to protect them in the afternoons?

No, I do have a few large trees that I may be able to use to shade them in the afternoon, but I don't think they will be entirely shaded. Dappled shade at best. I should have my greenhouse hoops with shade cloth if needed. I have a south side and a north side, the north side gets no sun at all. My entire backyard is on the east side of the house, but I can't use the area near the house because of the dogs.

Congrats on the new digs, hope that the climate is close to what you had before so the curve is easy. I think it's far more important for afternoon shade than morning shade, so you might be good with the dappled shade the large trees put down. I would look to incorporate a misting system into whatever sort of structure you build, it can be enormously helpful during heat stress periods.

Thanks Judy, yes, the climate is identical. We moved about 7 miles up the road. Downsized the house but super sized the backyard. Went from a 60x40 backyard to a 65x140. Plenty of room to grow the trees away from the daughter's menacing volleyball. I do have a misting system going on and will be using my 4 zone valve to control everything. Just waiting on the sprinkler guy to run me a line all the way to the back of the yard to set everything up.

Here is a pic of the survey I modified. Hopefully I will have all the trees for development in the white area, and anything in pots in the beige.



Here is the terrain before adding the SOD in the green area above. I am planning on placing the trees in the shade of the oak in the middle of that pic. I was told they were pin, but I think they are blackjack... will have to identify them.

Maybe a couple of patio umbrellas with weighed bases could help provide temporary adjustable shade.

It is fully fenced, they were building the other side fence when I took the picture. The SODed area is also fenced from the back area. Will try to post an updated pic later today.

Looking forward to watching the transformation. I would love a thread about building out your garden—sprinklers, benches, shade structure. I get a lot of value from study others’ gardens.

Definitely want to put them in a shady spot until you have a couple of days where the weather is forecast to be rainy or cloudy. Our sun will burn anything even pines.

Not today, but I was able to move all the trees from the apartment patio into the new house. Right now they are sitting on the fence of the house which is almost facing northeast. They get sun in the morning till around 10 am and again a little bit right before sun down. Will start moving them today to the backyard area today. Only 2 trees missing in this picture are the ficus, those were still on the truck.

If you have the shadecloth, I'd use it, at least as a transition for a couple weeks.
