I like your method of putting washers on before leaf out for future air layers. I’m gonna have to steal that.My Deshojo stock plant in spring glory with some flowers

This is a trial run for this method so results are tbd. I will report back once the branch starts choking!I like your method of putting washers on before leaf out for future air layers. I’m gonna have to steal that.
Could be seigen or bonfire or akaji nishiki. They’re all somewhat similar. It would be impossible to tell for sure what it is.Can anyone identify this cultivar from these spring leaves? I got this tree in 2000 and have no idea what it was, and sadly it died back about 4 years back, so now I am regrowing it from the one branch left... But I would love to know what is the cultivar. It has great orange/red foliage in the spring, and then green in the summer.

Did it suffer in shipping? The color on mine is a bit of a duller pink/red when the light isn't coming through like in my photos. My “seigen” that I just got in from Mendocino maples looks like compared to yours
Sorry, I responded before I saw your photos. I think it may simply be that yours was a bit more shaded at the nursery than mine. Mine has a bit of yellow in a few areas as well. Generally speaking, the more sun they are in as they leaf out, the more color you'll get. FWIW, I think It actually looks quite nice with the yellows/pinks in there as well, but understandably not what you were expecting.mine came in looking very yellow maybe it is ‘seigen aurem’ and was mislabeled. Also looks like it came in with a fungal problem

I totally agree. Sometimes it seems to even take a few years for them to really settle into their groove.Imho, any time you buy a maple from a nursery you have to wait a year to see representative colors. Overwintering in greenhouses, over fertilization, stress from shipping, etc. can all impact colors.

I haven't had luck with cuttings but I have an air layer that I separated last summer. It seems quite healthy on its own roots so far. Peve Multicolor is one of the ones that can have trouble with early season fungal issues, so I woke the air layer up under lights in the garage after it started to bud out. So just plain green leaves on the layer this spring, but I'm sure it will look great next year.I totally agree. Your Peve looks amazing! Have you attempted propagating it yet?
WOW! That is spectacular. Do you have a pic of the full tree?Imho, any time you buy a maple from a nursery you have to wait a year to see representative colors. Overwintering in greenhouses, over fertilization, stress from shipping, etc. can all impact colors.

I don't, but I'll try to get one this spring. Only parts of it have opening leaves right now. Most are still just elongating.WOW! That is spectacular. Do you have a pic of the full tree?
Really cool, do you have a pic to help me visualize?Thank you! I think it’s going to be a great bonsai in the future. I put a wire above the original root system so now this is the root system I’m working with on this seedling
