Rule of thumb with Azeleas?

I need to chop down an mountain azalea to move it. I know the bonsai rule is only one punishment a year. And I know now is the time of year to chop them hard. What can I do our would you do?

I would take it up, get settled in a good mix, and let it have it's way for at least one season maybe two. Then begin branch selection.

What do you mean?
You are going to chop it and dig it from the ground?
If so, yeah, do it like Steve said!

I've never had a problem cutting azaleas back and digging. Not saying this method is better, Just being honest about how I treat them.

What they said, chop, dig, arrange roots, pot in growing container, then let grow one or two seasons.

Cool thanks guys . Yes it needs to be chopped down some to move it . Because it's so big. And it would be in to much shade there.
So when would be the ideal time to do this ?

Correct time, if you can protect root ball from freezing, by bringing it in for cold nights, as soon as you can get a shovel in the ground.

Otherwise, after frost danger has passed.
