ABS LEARNING SYMPOSIUM: June 11-14, 2015

Should BN sponsor Vance and send him to the $1000.00 Colorado Spruce work shop as a dissenting undercover spy so he can come back and share all the sprucy tidbits with us all? besides he would get an old but runty spruce he could endlessly covet curing him of his cantankerous afflictions.

I'd like to to go to a workshop that crust puts on for some of those trees he's been posting. they're soooo cool! my kind of bonsai. vance can come too, or whoever else doesn't want to pay megabucks for the megashows. the American spirit at work, competing shows/events! (and innovative ideas)

I am sure that the cost that the place is charging ABS just to hold it there isnt cheap plus a lot of the professionals want some sort of fee usually. Hence the $260+ registration fee. However $105 a night for a room is at least 1/3 the cost of what a hotel room at a place like this usually goes for.

I have the ability to drive there so that cuts down on some of the cost because driving is still cheaper than flying. I also have a pretty good, stable job and can afford to do this once in a while. I can certainly understand where someone that is retired or recently out of college or with a family, mortgage, kids in college etc might balk at doing this.

By posting more content. You are at 14 and my content total is 5,832. That's the difference.

Over the weekend I registered for the event and two workshops (still toying with the idea of taking a third workshop). I'm a little annoyed at having to pay $260 just to get in the door, but it is what it is (I wonder if the price is going to keep some people away, which will only hurt the vendors). The good thing for me is that I don't have to come up with airfare, and I could drive there and back every day if necessary. For a local convention like this, particularly with all the headliners, this is like a once in a 10 or 20 year event that is hard to pass up.

For the workshops, the pictured material for some of the workshops is very nice. So not only will you get great material, but for me, the opportunity to work with masters in the art in a small class is almost worth the price itself. Some of the workshops are pricey for sure, but even looking at the Ryan Neil 3-day workshop, those junipers at an absolute minimum are $1000+ trees, and then you get to work closely with Ryan for 10 hours. To get that kind of access and training, you probably would have to sign up for his intensive which will involve the course fee, airfare, lodging, etc.

It would be cool to to meet other BNut'ers that are going. We should get a running list. I haven't decided whether I will stay at the resort or not, but I might for an evening or two to take advantage of the dinners and to meet others in person.

Any Bnutters going to the ABS show in a couple of weeks? I'm relatively local, but am planning on driving up Wednesday night to avoid traffic, and staying at the location for a couple of nights while I take a few of the workshops.

Besides yourself, at least Lordy and myself will be there.

When are you guys going up? Are you taking any workshops? We can go PM if that's better.

I am driving down there on Thursday. I am taking a few workshops.

Looking forward to the event. Hopefully things go ok for ABS. Unfortunately, interest in the workshops seems to have been on the very low end, with pretty low participation. I won't complain as I guess that means more one on one time with the workshop instructors.

Baltimore seems to have it's own set of problems right now. I find it hard to believe that this has not caused a decline in enrollment.

I think the Baltimore issues have been pretty contained in the downtown area. Ellicott City is a pretty distant suburb (if you can even call it a suburb of Baltimore) at about a half hour away from downtown Baltimore.

Nice! I only live 20 minutes from Turf Valley, so I'll be commuting Thurs to help setup the auctions, Fri, and Sat. I hope everyone has an educational event.

I would agree that Ellicott City is more of an entity of it's own, rather than anything to Balto. Closer to Columbia than anything else. Turf Valley is very secluded. Driving time from NJ is maybe 4 hrs tops.

I would love to be able to get a RMJ and 3 day workshop with RN. Actually my dream is to be able to collect something like that... too bad junipers don't grow in the wild over here.
Good luck and have fun!

Lots of good material in the vendor area. Had to bite on a Mark Comstock Kashima maple. Won two pots in raffles so far, and two raffles still to go, along with silent auction and regular auction which includes both the monster JBP that RN styled the first night, as well as a beautiful very large azalea from the Kennett Collection. I saw Paradox in a Satsuki workshop and after the trip to the Nat. Arb to see the juried pot design competition. Finished the day off back at the hotel for cocktails. Time to hit the rack for day 3, hopefully not another 16 hr day. Hope to get pics of the tree display area.

I'm still confused. Some are saying its just $20-$30 bucks to get inside and look around visit the vendors. Others are saying $260+ just to get inside. Which is correct? Pretty easy question--- which is true ?

Yep they sure keep you busy. It was nice to meet Lordy.
The material is great. Ryan Niel's demo was also very good. He is a very animated speaker and kept the audience engauged (spelling :/).

The exhibit is a bit small but the trees are lovely. I got pics of most if you dont Lordy.

The arboretum was awesome. It was my first time there and seeing the trees, especially Goshin was a special treat.

Lots of good stuff in the vendor area. I dont know if there is a daily fee for just the vendor area but I havent seen any guards at the doors checking for badges.

OMG the food.... Ive only had to pay for breakfast because the Thursday welcome reception and the Friday night trip to the arboretum had enough food to take care of everyone.

I was there Thursday night. Came up for the evening. Visited with many old, and some new friends in the vendor area.
