ZombieNick's 2020-2025 Five Year Azalea Contest Entry

I should add some things I learned already that I will try next time, as I don't intend on continuing this thread:
1. I chopped my second attempt in early April. I have since learned that the better time to do this here is in late January - early February.
2. I will switch up my cut paste. I was recommended to use the more putty like cut paste as it does a better job of sealing the wounds completely, which is extra important for azaleas.
3. It will go in a shaded greenhouse immediately after chopping and sheers will be disinfected before pruning (something I usually do anyways but admittedly got lazy on this go).
4. Not go it alone. I will do this work under the guidance of someone who has been successful in my area.

I am open to any other suggestions anyone has! I realize now that azaleas aren't the easiest thing to bonsai here in Southern California (hot, dry, winds and terrible alkaline water). A few people I have talked to say they don't bother with them, but at the same time, I have also seen people who have been extremely successful. My take away is that they are at least possible, albeit more involved that other species.
