WTB Chinese quince pre-bonsai

I have a bunch in the ground, none ready to go quite yet, all cuttings from this one. They take forever to trunk up; this was thumb-thick when I bought it in '06, and after 7 years in the ground, I can still get my hand around the base.
Interesting...I have one in the ground, planted in spring 2011 with trunk caliper 0.25 inches, as of last fall (3 growing seasons) the trunk was 2.25 inches. Growth seems comparable to other trees in the growing bed. I haven't done any pruning at all yet, will probably do a trunk chop in the spring which of course will slow down the rate of increase...but the base is getting to be about the size I want.

Brussels has had a few growing out in cans in the past. You'd need to call them and inquire.
George Muranaka grows them, but the only ones I've seen are about the size Martin Sweeney showed.
You might try Telperion Farms.

Thanks Brian!

Your tree sure looks very nice. Love the bark especially the lower portion...that will be amazing in just a few more years as the exfoliating bark pattern spread all throughout and branch ramification develops. I would love to watch & follow this one if you start a thread of it's own. :)

Can you share a pic Chris? I'd love to see growth comparison though I cannot grow any on the ground. :(

Mine have been somewhere between Chinese Elm and Japanese Maple in terms of trunk thickening. I have been chopping them more frequently to counteract their tendency to grow straight and taperless. Here is the tree in '06 and now. Trunk is about 2.5" above the flare.

I will start a thread on this one at some point, when I finally dig it. For now, here is a progression...http://nebaribonsai.wordpress.com/2012/12/01/chinese-quince-in-the-ground/

Hi Dario, the House of Bonsai in Lakewood CA has some Chinese quince. They have a website and sell online now. I got some of mine from there years ago.

I also have several nice ones in the ground and in pots, and if I'd ever get around to cleaning up my yard and move them out, I may be able to trade one to you for something. But no promises yet. I am too busy right now to go dig around.

Good luck.
Si

Thanks Si. I can wait, just PM or email me when you are ready and let me know what you want to trade it with. I am sure we can work something out.

I'll also check HoB.

Thanks again!

I saw those listed. Some of them looked really nice.
I managed to get 10% discount (after begging LOL) for this one... :)
It is supposedly; 4" root base, 3" trunk, and 14" high. I think the trunk is smaller than they claim though. I know it has "S" trunk but I am fine with it, beggars can't be choosers. ;)

The inside (lowest left) branch will definitely go and the leader shortened by half.

I agree the trunk looks a little smaller. I actually find that almost all of my prebonsai purchases have smaller trunks than listed. Rounding up is not fair

I ended up grabbing the smaller, cheaper one on eBay you passed on, it came for me last night. It's actually nicer than pictured. The main problem is that is it lacking in nebari but I had planned to try and thicken the trunk a little, anyway.

The HOB trees were a little more than I wanted to spend but you obviously got nicer material :)

FYI, I did not pass on that one...I was too busy in the backyard, I came in at 9pm and realized it ended already. I am a sniper so I normally put my bid in at the last 7 seconds (or so). You got lucky is all LOL. :p

Good that it found a good home and a fellow B-Nutter at that. :)

LOL, nice. I had the high bid the entire auction and no one sniped me. Very rare for eBay. I was sitting in front of my phone for the last few minutes expecting something to happen but I just walked away with it in the end. Lucky indeed :)

Nice material Dario.

Thanks. It need rootwork IMHO and will be planted deeper once it got here. The root on the left wrapped around to the back and is ugly. Most of the nebari seem to dive down after (due to planting depth error IMHO) so I need to coax them to grow out instead.

Developing the top should be easy.

house of bonsai adds so much saturtion to their pics! The greens are just ridiculous, nice tree anyway.

Look at these for example... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Ki...05&prg=10500&rk=1&rkt=6&sd=181458727656&rt=nc
Unless they live next to a nuclear plant, these look very awkward

Probably used as a marketing ploy to entice their online sales. And that's not to say that HoB doesn't sell good material. They're one of the best in Southern California. I love what they offer, but yes, those pictures are way over-saturated.
