The big metal cap wouldn't matter if you're going commando....I just buy new wire. I couldn't use anything like this cause the thong strap would get caught on that big metal cap! On the end of the bench could work.

That looks like too much work! I just grab each piece with a pair of pliers at each end, bring them together in front of my chest, and YANK them straight out to the sides. Works great! And it's quick. After taking the wire off of several large projects, I was left with a large pile of used wire.

Being the cheapo, err-- the frugal guy, that I am I wanted to reuse as much as I could; but, I had to straighten it first. While the copper will have to be heat treated again, the aluminum would be perfectly usable if I could straighten it.
I kicked it around a bit in my head and drank some PBR for inspiration; here is what I came up with. I pick up these three items at Home Depot:

A 3/4 x 8 inch galvanized nipple
A 3/4 inch floor mount galvanized flange
A 3/4 inch galvanized cap
Oh, and some New Castle Ale at Target, it was on sale.
Here it is assembled, I screwed it to the front of my new bonsai work bench.

Now, I know you are probably thinking that the Mullet has had too much New Castle, but here is how it works. Just grab the wire by the ends and pull it against the nipple in a back in forth motion. It only takes less that a minute to straighten a pretty thick wire. Here it is in action, Mrs. Mullet gets credit for the action shots.

While I know this isn't the only way to do it, it works out well for me as I can straighten while I work. I used to do it with my vise in the shop, and have pulled it with pliers too. Anyway, Hope it Helps.

Wow, you have a lot of kneesHaving had my fifth knee operation two months ago, that looks like pain just waiting to happen.
Wow, you have a lot of knees
Without which....
It would not be a Johnson.
I am amazed that MM actually sought out....paid for (assumed)
And affixed the unnecessary part of this endeavor to make it look like....
Let's just say backing into it would be way worse than a knee bump....no matter the knee situation.
Sorce
Unfortunately they are all in the same knee.

Actually, it is there to keep one from cutting themselves on the threads of the pipe if they happen to bump into it. The edge of the threads can sharp, so while not completely necessary, it has a function, other than aesthetics. I don't plan on backing up on it. I don't think it looks much like a Johnson, but if it looks like yours, I am sorry, it is only six inches and 3/4 inches around.
You don't have to yank it that hard!I had to quit the "yank" when I tore my left bicep, lol.
That's what I said. You don't have to yank it that hard!
Nice!!
