Winter Preparation-What Do You Do

Our Temps are pretty similar right now. this bald cypress doesn't seem to wanna go dormant

The difference is mine stay outside on a shelf so they get far more exposure and just go dormant as the days get shorter. They do however all go dormant at different times and wake up in Spring at different times a bit later then other trees... Odd but ok ;)

That one came this spring from south Florida, so it's never really seen a winter (as far as our term of winter goes). I did allow it to get hit outside on the bench with about a week of Temps in the 20s, then I put it away. stupid thing lol

Not stupid by any standard but it looks like it did great and honest if it was here I would put it back out now. It will most likely live protected but it won't do as good next season... actually two or three years without a dormant period will most likely kill a BC. They grow outdoors here and if you get a chance to get a whip next Spring toss it in the ground - crazy but that tree handles a real Winter just fine in pretty harsh conditions. Hell, mine stay in three to four inches of water and freeze/defrost all Winter

I may just do that, I generally keep the more terder trees or anything in a shallow bonsai pot in the tree house. This one is neither at this point, I was just originally worried about its reaction to winter but it apparently doesn't mind the cold. Out to the bench with the conifers it goes!

Last week's brief snowfall
IMG_0067.JPG

This week it is likely to snow, again. Of particular concern, the daily lows will be in the 20s for at least five days straight. I've moved my smaller and more temperate trees under benches and against the fences.

I relented and put mine inside last Thursday and Friday nights. Put the D-trees in the garage in Thursday and the junipers and pines in the coldframe on Friday night.
The predicted temps for the later half of this week is what prompted me to move them in. Lows of 14 and 16 with wind chills down to zero or below.

I opened up the cold frame tonight after work and watered them because the day time temps were in the 40s yesterday and will be today and tomorrow.
Also watered all the ones in the garage.

I hope my cold frame boxes keep the roots of my trees 25-35F if the boxes are put on the ground in a protected inner corner of the (outside of the) house. The reason for my concern is that temperatures tomorrow are supposed to be 18-23F with 25-35 mph winds, then 10F tomorrow night with 15-25 mph winds. I am worried those boxes even on the ground in a protected corner will allow the rootzone to get below 25F in prolonged windy and cold conditions.

Is your coldframe covered and how is it contructed?

Single digets here for next 2 days. Maybe see a teen tomorrow. At least we got 4 inches of snow to make up for the mulch I am lacking.

Mulch is your friend...

I am hoping those open top wooden boxes of fine pine bark mulch insulate enough.

If having ice/snow make sure any top heavy trees are under shelter or weighted down well:mad:.

So
What do you DON'T do!

Ready for the polar vortex?

This is the first winter I have a specific monetary investment in the hobby. I know exactly how much money will be flushed if my accommodations suck.

I have 5 trees. 2 ponderosa, 2 Austrian black. One red maple started from seed last year.

Under mulch. Under snow. Not much more I can do.

Nervous though. -15 here we come...and it's not even xmas.

The snow insulation will make the ambient air temps a non issue...seriously.

Oh no! How is it down there?

Here in Portland I have 2" of fine powder snow.
...Did you get more?......our 12" is frozen solid with -13f this morning......with more snow forecasted for Sunday then its supposed to warm up to low 40's.....
