I stopped by a liquor store that I had never visited before for a Friday pick me up. Right in front of my car was a landscape maple like I had never seen before. The leaves were very tiny (for a landscape plant) and the growth pattern reminded me of my Kotohime. What kind of landscape maple is this? It looks like A smaller specimen could make some really good bonsai!

Agreed! Sure looks like a shishi from the photos. Some nurseries do carry them and sometimes large ones!

Be mindful that they do not bud back as readily or vigorously your regular green A. Palmatum and challenging to ramify well. Very slow to develop as bonsai. Nevertheless beautiful maple. Bill has a few that are outstanding specimens 40+ years in the making.

There is only one maple guy and his name is @MACH5 . The rest of us are just followers. Except @Smoke i think. He has some nice tridents too.

I came across another Japanese maple cultivar that has leaves curled like that last week. I cannot remember the name, but I will check it out when I can. In the end this one is more likely a Shishigashira.

Any insight on how well they air layer or strike? I bought one for the landscape but I'd like to layer some branches off or maybe even layer it off the graft. Thanks!

It seems the vote is unanimous- and I'll add mine to the list. Shishigashira.

Vin no direct experience with air layering this cultivar. From what I have seen, it should not be a problem and looks like they layer well. I am planning to do the same. Certainly will report back.
