Worked one of my junipers... just unwired I trimmed slightly to get it ready for winter. Primary objective of this season was to strengthen the tree... particularly cascading branch... so I have options later. For now it's unique combination of raft and semi-cascade. I'm waiting for the tree to show me the way... might actually stay as raft/semi-cascade.
First photo when purchased... second today.

Attended the ABA Sacramento consignment sale and live auction (yesterday, got home late)- although the tree I wanted went to another bidder, I brought home this little olive from their consignment tables and more importantly, met some cool bonsai people.

I think this should be in the will it bonsai category. I did some scouting on a friends property and stumbled across a grove of big leaf magnolias. 🤔 I wonder if these leaves will reduce 🤣

Appears to be Umbrella Magnolia, I planted a few in my yard as shade / visual interest trees. even if the leaves find a way to reduce some, you're still looking at flowers that will be half the size of the bonsai... Perhaps thats the sort of dramatic visual effect you're looking for though. 🤔

Mauro recently released a video working with Katsura (Cercidiphyllum, it can kind of be confusing when people call their 'Katsura' JM Katsura). It's one of the few resources I've found discussing or working on the species, so it got me very fired up to start meaningfully working on my raw nursery stock one. Big surprise that his is much nicer 😉, though im very much looking forward to growing with this piece of material.

Worked on my garden today. I added a pathway to the conifer garden. And added some places for more afternoon shade trees.

My hinoki now greets visitors to the garden, which feels appropriate. (Also, I needed a better place for that tree, this will hopefully give it more balanced sunlight).IMG_5537.jpegIMG_5538.jpegIMG_5539.jpegIMG_5543.jpegIMG_5547.jpeg

Then took off wire at the shop
IMG_9998.jpeg

Then cleaned dead needles out of foliage… cleaned some bottom needles… oiled up the pot

Finally cleaned up this maple, then scrubbed off moss and oiled up the pot…It’s one of my favorite pots btw

Tonight I’m staring at this Chinese quince and debating if I should put it back in a grow pot next year, or a box, and letting it run wild

It looks a bit better than in the photo but at the very least the apex needs to be grown out. I may want to make it taller in general. Branches need taper and the bottom branch on the left is split a little at a junction, but pieces healthy all year. So maybe totally regrow that.

Too nice of a starting point not to do right, but also I’m a hobbyist so maybe just put it in a normal different pot and be ok with it taking longer

I dunno

I also took much of the (small amount of) wire I put on this arakawa. I’m happy with what I did with it this year and look forward to developing it further. Really hard to photograph against the wood. I worry I should eventually rebuild the apex on this, too, but maybe not. That last extension at the top left of the apex looks wrong, but maybe I’m just being too judgemental. Might not need to be perfect once it barks up and I’d prefer to keep it.

I did some finish work on a few concrete pots. Pretty happy with how these came out!

They look gorgeous when they're soaked. I've still got to seal 'em.
