"A few years"? Look at the size of those Kingsville! How long ago did you start them, and from how big?
Not sure, maybe 4 or 5 years ago, I'm guessing they may have doubled in trunk diameter, lots of top growth though and fairly good rootage. 20250427_195611.jpg20250427_195618.jpg

What do you think? Maybe 40 more yrs to catch this one?

Setting up the southern side of the house while the backyard get's worked on. One more hoop frame to assemble with 30% shade cloth right next to the over with 70% for the maples. Metal hoops are empty, just there to slow the wind. Maples and fresh repots under the 70% cloth right now, everything else that can take full sun on the right side against the wall. JBP, trident, and BCs are the end. The area where the shade cloth is, is also under the canopy of 3 big post oaks. Shade cloth offers protection from the 1-5pm sun.

Watering system should be installed this week.

Trident, JBP, and BC competing to see who's the highest.

Very nice! Any tips for getting them rooted? I'll be looking to take cuttings from this one this spring. I have a second with similar size trunk, about an inch, untouched in its nursery pot.

Potted up the rooted pomegranate cutting the kids and I got on Earth Day. Potted in Perilite with a handful of garden compost along with a little bit of used bonsai soil from a couple of failed found seedlings. I set one up as a potential root over rock, or exposed root (I've got years to decide), added wire to one that was a particularly long whip, the others I will let just grow for while. I'll let my kids decide the fate of their trees. My son, age 10, seems pretty interested in helping with trees. We went to the garden center the other day to pick up a few more nursery pots and he asked to get a cactus, so of course I let him get a little cactus and a cool20250427_175107.jpg

Just keep them moist and out of direct sun and they should root easily.

Large yaupons collected from a family members yard. Not dead.. yet!

Bought another spruce yamadori from Satoyama Bonsai, picked up 2 of my trees, a huge tote of pumice, and helped load 5 trees the Waterfront Botanical Gardens in Louisville picked up today. Heading back tomorrow to pick up another one seed juniper as well.

New spruce...Live vein wraps the trunk 4 full rotations.

Went for a walk around my local botanical garden. I’d seen pictures of Ume flowers posted on instagram with the garden’s location tagged so I knew they were there but hadn’t been able to find them on previous visits. I knew they had to be near one of the entrances as I doubt the general public would have found them and posted them on IG unless they were right in your face as you walked in. My hunch was correct and my route today took me past one of the entrances I hadn’t scouted out before.
I’ll try go back in winter to see the flowers 🌸

Mealybugs are such a pain. The scots pine were treated with systemic acephate yesterday. Today they got the mostly dried out mealybugs hosed off. Last night it was 75°F and windy. This hot dry weather isn't great. Another acephate treatment in three days.
