Water/Willow Oak from Jay Wilson

Yes that is an impressive and beautiful garden! I am currently working/building mine and if it turns out hopefully half as nice I'll be very happy. My problem is that I currently do not have enough trees to fill the space but I think that IS a good problem to have :p

John, any update on this tree now that you've had it for a full growing season?

It has done extremely well....hedge pruned at least 3 times...decent reduction in leaf size...good vigorous growth in spite of the heavy root prune it got in the Spring. No pics at the moment...fighting a kidney stone and just don't have the energy to take one...

Ouch! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Mine got cut back 3 times even in this climate, and it was starting to produce a 4th growth spurt that was thwarted by the colder weather. Seems like a very vigorous species!

Chris

agreed! It has made me a look at oaks a little more than I have in the past.

I have a special project planned for mine sometime this winter...I'll post photos...I'm sure it will get plenty of boos and hisses from the more traditional crowd:)

Crap! Doesn't that mean you've got to give up your morning Mountain Dew? Get better, Man! You've got some big trees to move. Hmmm, maybe moving the big trees will help move the kidney stone....Seriously, good luck. My daughter had one last year that was finally removed surgically on Christmas Eve...no fun at all.

Thanks Chris and Dave!

Spent the night in the er...passed one on the right side but still have a 5 meter, ok that is what it feels like that even if its only 5 mm, on the left side to go. Ever seen a 6'3" and 260# guy scream and cry like a baby?? I'm just happy to be alive!

Wow! Johng, feel better man. I bet the shoulder sent it down as a payback:) Your oak is mighty impressive, no surprise!

As mentioned earlier, I have been thinking about something a little different for this tree. The problem as I see it is the large scar on the main trunk. I removed a branch there which only added to an existing chop scar. I spent sometime with Kathy Shaner and did some carving which improved the situation....but...I still I didn't like it. ...here are the results about 2 months after carving...

Spent a bunch of time considering options and then one day a solution came to me...

I had massive amounts of help from my good buddy Ken...without him this certainly would not have been possible...

Here is how we disguised the scar...

The building process...the wood is cypress and we hand cut each piece to fit...process took about 5 hours.

While the decking is permanent...relatively...the house is actually removable.

A few more details will be added...the wood will be allowed to naturally grey before being sealed.
It was a good day!! Thanks Ken!!

Just wow! You guys, always inspiring and innovating. Thanks for sharing, hope the video is coming soon.

Fun project! Where I live the "details" would land up to be a Chickadee nest:eek: Once that wood is grey though I must admit it will have Lenz calling you!

I only wish the windows were bigger so I could see more of the tree inside the house. I like it in the 3rd shot where the framing is in but not the walls. Really innovative.
