Warm winter wreaking havoc...Chinese Quince

All I can say is, wow.....
Do people look at you a little strange when they catch you saying, "Why can't it be a little colder?"
Can only hope you don't have to resort to the "second wine fridge"
It's the holidays, should be empty soon, just in case!:p

Good luck.....:)

Yes, that is the plan, after all the holiday stuff has been consumed, I'll take all the shelving out and put the quince, and maybe the stewartia in if I can fit them both. The ice blocks are keeping the greenhouse 4-6 degrees cooler, but it's still at 60 in there right now. Crazy.

And actually people round here are used to me wanting it to be colder, I love the winter (when it is winter...) and despise anything over 85!

@JudyB You're right, when it's winter it should be colder. I was reading an article noting how this christmas is breaking records and people are arguing "calm down it's a little warmer, we had 3 epic cold winters, we could use a warmer one." and I'm sitting here thinking, "oh the bonsai Jedi's are going to feel that comment."

Today I saw a cherry tree in FULL BLOOM in the Japanese garden at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston!!

I moved my Larch into my front stairway in a giant stockpot along with some ice. It's colder there than it was outside today. :(

Been fighting the sun, I can put ice on the soil, but the air temps are still high. If I can make it for 5 ot 6 more days, we are getting some cold temps after that. I see the western and plains states are getting blamed, wish there was a little equalization, I could use a little of that, and I know you could use a little of what we have.

Been warm enough here that my elms are getting flowers.

So, what can one do if you don't have a fridge, my flowering almond has stated swelling buds. I been putting ice on the soil and keeping them in the shade but it like summer heat and humidity here. I really don't want to lose a tree to weird weather

I've been successful with ice blocks on the soil as far as keeping the buds from getting any bigger on the C.Quince. I have to keep after it though. Looks like after Sunday it'll get cooler here, all you can do is do the best you can and hope!

i've noticed quite a few leaves opened on my tridents and buds that are gonna open any second.i got a feeling my other trees are gonna do the same soon
......should i be concerned? should i be putting ice on them?

If you can see the edges of the leaves, it's too late. The tree has lost it's cold hardiness and has started to grow. It's going to need as much sun as possible as well as being kept above freezing.

I feel like a lot of us are going to lose a lot of trees this year, my self included

You can still save the buds that have not opened if you do the icing thing and the weather gets back to where it should be. I suppose it's a judgement call about how many buds are open and how many are not. I would be loath to repot any tree that had open buds on it next spring, as this will weaken the tree.

This and the fact th domency will be out of wack. My trees that needs it colder for longer may suffer too

One of my quince just started blooming...

I went a little crazy and ogt phase 22 panels and ice packs and ice blocks- I put everything in the shade and ice packs on on everything and sides and then ice blocks where else-So far I stop my almond from anymore buds swelling and nothing going crazy-but tomorrows 77! the bonsai 2 step continues

no more leafing on my trees-upper 60's are over.tonight we're supposed to get a mostly sleet wintry mix with all rain tomorow and the 10 day forecast calling for temps going down to the low 4os upper 30's with overnight lows around freezing.
so i'm hoping i'm safe now

I arrested my problem two trees with the ice blocks, we are slipping down from 50 this morning back down the mercury slide, and will get freezing temps again soon. So safe here for now, good job Giga, and good luck, hope it cools off for you soon too.
