Very corky American elm?

The mother plant has FINALLY started budding out. I took hardwood cuttings last December and have one with a green bud. Hoping the rest will bud out soon.

I haven't updated this in quite a while. That one cutting that showed promise did survive. After a couple of years I took some more cuttings and air layers. The cuttings all died, but a couple of layers took after a long time. The growth of the mother plant has been slow. Here it is today:

It's about six feet tall and maybe a two inch diameter trunk. Slow grower. And, the squirrels haven't been helping.

It also has some weird, angular growth habits. Goes straight up and the takes a 90 degree turn and goes straight again.

Not sure how well this will work for bonsai, but I'm committed now. I've got the mother plant plus six growing now. Sent a couple off to BNut too.

OK, update a year later. I decided to air layer the tree above the squirrel damage to the trunk. I also laid it on it's side. It really tries to grow in a single plane, so I'm hoping the radical change in angle will help develop a third dimension.

I also took some more propagation air layers.
