Unknown Malus (Crabapple) Clump #1

Liking this clump this year. Pruned back to reign in growth and start building some more structural option lower down.

A new front i like. Breaks up the symmetry and adds some dynamic movement to the planting.

Could of sworn i took more pictures... oh well. Heres the repot.

After:

The trees all have some serious swelling at the roots just below the area sticking out of the soil. That will be the fuse point in another few years when I repot again. Will try cutting them flat and joining them as discussed earlier.

I strongly suspect these are callery pears, which do resemble Malus in leaf. In any case, they obviously are performing well, and also will have an attractive bloom. (Some people complain about the odor of their flowers, but personally I have a hard time detecting any smell from them.)

Results of the May pruning:

I fertilized, updated my notes, and it's ready for the fall. Next year should be a good year for the tree.

End of year. Had very nice red foliage which I did not get a chance to really enjoy much as I was in Georgia at it's peak. I'm happy with the progress. The nebari is bulbing up nicely. Next year I will fertilize heavy for maximum growth, give another early summer prune and let it run the rest of the year. Maybe get some light wiring on it.

Cut back a few long shoots, fertilized. Topped off with some soil. Im running low on soil so... will need to mix some soon.
