Maybe it needs one more step at the top?

Nothing wrong with letting it be, as is, and giving it further contemplation.
See where your imagination can carry you and bring that to the design.....
But I would be tempted to swap out the bulky one at the top for two smaller, less "visually" heavy ones almost completely obscured by some moss.
You did a lot of adjusting to the planting to create a more congruent visual......and it is better, try to mimic that thought process as you imagine the look of the stairs.

You have really got me looking long and hard at these steps. Didn't get round to letting the beast out this weekend though. Will look at it during the week.

I have to agree on that top step. It just looks too square and too perfect (no rough edges etc)

So I got some time today to work on that top step.

Okay. Enough fiddling and time to stop now. I believe this is a great "first" attempt at getting the stairs done on my forest. Loads of corrections but overall I believe a job well done.

I am happy with what I have achieved. Hopefully over the next month it will settle nicely and the moss will establish itself. I will make 100 % sure that it is right before I commit to taking it to a show end of Oct.

best points: the stairs and the placement of trees. I really like the perspective created by your tree placement. Much better than most forest plantings I've seen.

I intend this to be constructive criticism to help you develop in the future.
After the show in October You might consider detail work on the trees. Some of the trees have branches that are too thick, relative to their trunks. This is a minor point, overall the forest is great. Now that you have got tree placement ''just right'' you have the opportunity for further refinement by focusing on the structure of the trees. But don't do anything until after your October show.

I have to agree with you on the branching of the forest. That is one of the problems that I created over the years with not having the knowledge but it can be rectified. With just over a month to go till the show, I am just concentrating on making sure that the growth does not get out of hand and doing some minor cutting back on the growth to maintain the overall view. I am also concentrating hard on developing the moss around the stairs but that is proving very difficult at the moment because of the heat. But luckily I work from home, so it means going outside on regular basis and giving it a good mist with a spray bottle.

Great progression story, Dorian ! The stairs gave scale to the whole forest & yet, is subtle, does not distract. Lot of good suggestions too. This is what differentiates a post on a forum here vs. posting on blog/youtube/fb.

I took the liberty of doing a side by side comparison of your pics. Hope you do not mind
