Tree / Bonsai drawings / sketches

I know this isn’t any good, but I’m only posting because this is what I woke up this morning with a vision in my mind of. I think it’s this threads fault because I looked at it late last night. It was part of a dream, made up of a tight foliaged conifer of some sort. So I did a quick little scribble.6B40F617-9E65-46C9-B7F4-B00E707B84DC.jpeg

not to bad, at least you can see that the trunks are placed with some depth!
I suck at sketching, photoshop ill manage but drawing is another thing im trying to sketch some more often to hopefully get a little better at it as well

Thanks. I’m not much of an artist either so it’s more of the composition than the look which stuck with me, but it seems like a useful way to remember your ideas, no matter the skill level. Still, practice make perfect.

the trunk and branches i can draw sorta 2D ish but adding the depth or drawing foliage pads into a shape not so well lol
this is what i just skribbled as future idea for one of my projects

thats quite nicely done !
what program do you use for this kind of art?
Thanks! Adobe Photoshop / illustrator is what I use but there is a subscription. Gimp and Krita are free programs that are apparently good substitutes. Have not use them myself though.

If you want free gfx software I highly recommend Sketchbook Pro from Autodesk. I bought a license once years ago, but they have since made it free. I think it is much more user friendly and light weight vs. Photoshop. Great for a more casual user, but still has great features.

I draw bonsai fairly regularly, mostly just small sketches to play with design/form/motion ideas. Here are a couple of more recent samples.

What are you using to color them? I've been looking for markers to do similar stuff, but I really don't know what they're called.

I have a few sets of lower end markers (read, not Copics). Some super generic large colored marker sets, one is from Artify.

But the markers that I really love are grey tones, just various shades from light grey on up to black. Currently using Prismacolors (have also used Windsor Newton and Chartpak). I really like the mix of grey tones for adding some weight/depth without getting into color.

That’s the beauty of scribbling down ideas. You don’t have to get the depth or realism, you’re just experimenting with shapes and an overall vision. If you’re anything like me the idea will just end up forgotten without these little sketches to go over later. I like the concept of your design too.
