Funky little maple with lots of growing still to do, freshly repotted yesterday. This was a layer I separated 9 months ago. The long straight branch is a sacrifice from the back of the trunk
not much but experimenting with mame with a couple of established bougie cuttings. they grow too fast and have leaves too big to be good for this i imagine, but it’ll be fun to mess around with
Juniper potted in wood fired container. After trying tea bags and plastic fertilizer baskets, these new copper fertilizer baskets seem to be keeping critters at bay.
Ficus salicaria, 2019 upon acquisition and after yesterday’s repot. I will try to avoid the ginseng-like tuber look as much as I can when it goes into an even shallower pot in the future, and I’m hoping the thin "neck" portion of the trunk will normalize in width over time so that I can get a true pyramidal sumo shape.
Cotoneaster from a cutting 3 years ago . It’s late winter here and spring is in the air . I pruned and potted this tree back into its summer pot today . I don’t have time in the winter months to look after my trees too much because I have a winter business , so in Autumn I pot up this tree into a ‘tube’ and let its growth run in an unheated glasshouse .
Messing around developing a little Pyracantha cascade from a cutting in a freebie Dorda pot... apparently this one has orange berries. Trying to do a few more smaller trees, comparatively quick and easy little projects.

Went to Bonsai West for a fantastic group meeting that Zuma was leading. It was great to feel everything I’ve been learning come together and felt confident to start out on this white pine that’s been on my bench since spring.
I’ve been letting myself have a lot of fun (see: chopped boug in a Koyo, why not) with what I’m comfortable doing for the sake of learning - in some instances I’ll be set back a year or more, but I think it’s helpful to get the repetition and thought process dialed in for me this year. I guess I’m seeing this as my transitional year to…. I don’t know. Something else than what I’ve been doing in bonsai.
But trees like this one I’m trying to be good to. I bought it in this pot, next year it’ll go into a grow pot for further development.
