My Tom Thumb Cotoneaster.

This started with a pretty bad scale infestation. Took about 2 hours to find em all. Then I found a couple centipedes and threw em in the pot to help out with any straggling crawlers.

That was mid May.
I let it go for a couple weeks, and took this shot 5/30, after a pruning.20160530_192847.jpg

Yes....for that thread!

Somewhere around Mid July I cut it again. No pics....but I took it back pretty hard, to prevent problems, and for some structure.

I didn't even realize this next pic is already 2 weeks old!
From 8/1...

This lil effer has been my strongest grower this year. Hasn't been touched by any other of the 2.5 million pests I got in this yard.

I been wanting a Cotoneaster for a long time.
Now that I have one, it has become my absolute favorite tree to work with.

Seems any leaf size reduction may render them invisible!
Perfect for my love of the ultrasmall.

I'll Probly go cut it again for the hell of it, I'm sure it has new crotch branches already.

You don't like it?
Run tell your Mame!

Here's the thing...

I posted that at 6:19...after picking up dog shit, watering, and fish fertin, I reckon it was about 7 when I say down with this thing again.

It is now 8:38, and I am about 1/3 done going over this thing again.

Here's a 2 week growth comparison shot..

Forgot some smileys and shit....that sounds rude! Sorry!

Nice cotoneaster shohin. soon as you have 2 or 3 levels of ramification, it will be ready for a show pot. Keep it in the nursery can for another year or two, but it won't be long and it will be ready for a bonsai pot. Nice.

Sweet!...
I love shohin stuff.
Looks like this guy will be really cool in a few years.
....Mickey's though??
Bringing me back to the hood with the wide mouth grenade bottle.

The best kind.
They used to sell wide mouth 40 oz bottles of King Cobra, Mickey's, Steel Reserve, and all those malt liquors....
I always heard a rumor that they stopped making wide mouth 40's because you can drink it too fast for your own good... ;)

I went to clean up the surface of this today and found worse conditions than I expected.

There is no way in hell this would have survived winter.

So....

Isn't that hole/rip around that screw a potential rotting risk?

Is that planted in DE with a little PB? Several of my trees are going into colander-like containers come spring, not sure what soil to use.

Pine bark?
Yeah...but just left overs I was too lazy to pull out...don't be to lazy to pull out in other endeavors.

All the branches that made this a tree are dead....it's alive....but barely....BTW.

@GrantHamby

I have one that I transplanted into pours glass beads, lava, and coconut fiber... not much fiber either, and it does not like it. I'm going to do another transplant next spring and put it in 100% 2-6mm gravel. They grow really fast, but they don't like wet feet that much. With a smaller plant like this the concern of wasting a LOT of water is dramatically reduced. I think you have frequent and heavy rains at times and IMHO a highly pours soil will be better than anything that is absorbent... but, mine is just one opinion; take it with a grain of salt. (Although, if you are home all the time and can shelter the plant when the rains threaten, then I'd stick with your usual mix)
