Stewartia Monadelpha

First haircut of the year. I left nearly all of the flower buds, so the shape is a little lumpy in places, but it will be cool to see it in bloom.

It appears the flower buds form on last year’s branches, as they’re closer to the interior, and not on this year’s new extensions.

Gorgeous tree! I see they're native to Japan and enjoy part shade. Any chance these trees could thrive in zone 9? Or would the summer temps be too high?

Do you have a pic of the all the flowers?

Looking good Bri. I really like this tree! Two years ago I started working with a medium size triple trunk one that I purchased from Bjorn. Thus far I love working with this species. Very responsive with outstanding autumn color.

Repotted this one also. Choosing among 3 containers; Reiho, Koyo, Shuho. All close in size and color, and yet all pretty different.

combing out the roots, it was clear I could have waited another year. Shuho won out.

Amazing work @Brian Van Fleet !

So many of your threads are so old and informative …

Am moving from frigid Minnesota to Atlanta Georgia sometime in May and wondering what chances do Stewartia and Japanese White pines have in hot and humid Atlanta with less cold winter dormancy periods ?

Guess that means I’m getting old too.😂

Atlanta and Birmingham are the same climate. Stewartia does just fine. JWP can do well here, but having a somewhat sheltered location for them helps in the hottest of summer weather. They don’t appreciate constant moisture so watering correctly is key.

Thank you @Brian Van Fleet ! This makes me feel so much better . Mainly my concern was around JWP not having enough winter dormancy and humid conditions . You know more than me how they love being dry !
