Species Study - Acer Platenoides/Acer Rubrum

A little surprised I collected Amur seeds left on a tree over winter planted in large containers in Ottawa naturally stratified . Planted this spring about 6 weeks ago so far nothing
Ssp. Ginnalla have some of the WACKIEST "replicable" germination requirements/parameters.

I BELIEVE, for mine, I did 60 days warm strat... then 120 days cold strat...

Where is this thread. I have a few collected amurs I’m hoping pull through!

would love to learn more about your work with them

You are correct "Brainerd" it is. In my decrepit mind, isn't Brainerd only a couple - few miles from Duluth, LOL. Okay, it's over 100 miles, maybe 120, and looks like there are no direct roads to get there.
Been there a few times as a kid . Paul Bunyan Land lol. It's not too far.

Much of my work goes un documented, I am pretty busy between work and my real work. I get carried away with collecting more. Amur are among the toughest. Not much advice needed

Good to know they are tough. I just recently collected them so it was a bit late. Hopefully they will rebound

Why did you lump together red maples with Norway maples? Did you just happen to be working on both when you started the thread?

Haha!! Yes...

It was BEFORE any of the threads started getting traction.. and was intended to be a "My favorite two NON-ideal NA Acers"...

I guess I COULD change it..

It DOES say "moderator" at the top of my screen.

I ask partly because of my love of Acer rubrum and distaste for Acer platenoides. Red maples are native to my area and well balanced with other species. Norway maples are invasive with a root system that’s destructive to building foundations. Not that planting a red maple right next to your house is a good idea either, but at least they’re more predictable.

I understand about the norway maples... They are invasive here, too... but weren't classified as such 10-15 years ago, When the Arbor Day Foundation did all the planting for our "Tree Town induction" - thing. 😂😂

They are EVERYWHERE... but MOST.... are "crimson"

I believe some may " reset" . Anyhow even with a bad crop, I rip off the wings and soak them after strat time. Seems to help

I got 2 red maples I haven't had to prune to much this year the deer keeps doing it for me. I guess I'm going for the o natural look.
Yall keep up the good work I'm learning.

My comment was based on if they require a warm then cold strat . One would expect some success with seeds that ripened then spent a winter in zone 4 on the tree out of about 150 seeds just surprised I got nothing . I’ll get some fresh seeds this year and try again

Has anyone tried freezing seed to cold strat it . Reason I ask is most strat recommendations for cold is 5 d/c to -5d/c most fridges are often barely capable of 5 consistently opening the door has drastic temp changes . I have tried successfully to just plant fall ripening seeds in trays in the fall and just let them freeze in storage with trees . It works for say sugar maple but the yield is low . Had anyone but seeds in the freezer is the question

Sort basically wrong place for the question But in the subject of red maple . Found a interesting source near my cottage . Trees seem to have a more grey silver bark than normal rubrum and somewhat smaller leaves . Slightly harsh conditions may be a factor . Windy area . Not sure if fall colour but there is young ones I can collect in the spring

I have bigger rubrum, but this is special to me. Not seed grown but plucked shortly after sprouting. 3 years old now , first trim, about 2 weeks ago.( all vigorous top growth cut down).

At my fridge's coldest setting.. my crisper drawer stays at about 33F... so SOMETIMES this means slightly freezy/frosty..

I've never attempted a full freeze,
