My grandma said she had an Elm, and she lived in an appartment, she was going to give it away.

...so as anybody from here would have done.

Now, I do not know what variety it is, and what should I do. I was thinking broom after layering the second trunk out. Or maybe use the double trunk.

It is autumn here in Chile, any tips on what to do?

I have a bunch of elms and this doesnt look like any of mine. The bark on yours is smooth. Maybe Zelkova. I only have a small one so I'm not sure. Look those up. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

hahahaha guilty as charged.

There is another tree in the pot that might not let you see the tree perfectly. The leaves seem to be like double the size as my chinese elm mallsai but has never been trained as bonsai.

i have checked elm varieties but they all loo pretty much the same.

should I just wait untill begining of spring to do a repot into bonsai soil and a heavy trunk chop? or do I trunk chop it now in autumn and root prune when buds start extending just as in maples?

Yep. Wait for spring and do everything in one go. Chop and roots same day.

thanks! will do!

should i do a double trunk or broom?

I would do a double trunk shaped with a single broom canopy.

Hard to tell variety, the pics are... Not the best.

Yes, it should be "bonsai able".. Leaves will reduce if you treat it right. Get it in a smaller pot, get some ramification going.. the leaves will reduce for you.

Apparently it is known as chilean elm, some variant of ulmus minor.

So I am going to chop it soon.

I need help, what would you do with this tree??

I would be inclined eventually to chop each trunk to about half its present height, or even to a third, after it is growing well. Presenty, the growth seems a bit weak. Is this still being kept indoors, or is it getting full sun outside, as it should?

I live in the southern hemisphere, so it is almost winter. it had a good growth season.

please help!
I won't have time for a couple of weeks after today.

If it's almost winter there don't do a thing. Just let it go dormant and next spring go at it.

Where should I chop this tree in spring? I was thinking keeping both trunks the thicker on the left a bit taller than the thinner one.

Or do two airlayers and make brooms. And keep the original lower trunk, cut the right thinnner branch to create some taper.
