Snow in Houston Beaumont Baton Rouge and New Orleans

I just moved everything to the garage. I knew snow would insulate but was worried about the hard freeze in the days after. All my tropical plants in the ground are dead, meh.

Ouch. That stinks. I'm sorry that happened. But trees are replaceable; people, not so much. Glad you're safe.

We were at 7F this morning. Others in the region got down to -1F. Pipes are frozen despite covering/wrapping them. Infrastructure here is just not built for this type of event.
That's crazy cold there. Hope they didn't burst!
Normally running the water at a trickle overnight keeps the pipes from freezing.
My exposed line in the crawl space has heat tape on it that turns on at 40ºF.
I leave it plugged in year round and its thermostat does the work.
Disconnecting the garden hose and shutting off water to the outdoor spigot then opening the spigot
has always provided protection there for me.

If this happens again don’t rely on wrapping pipes. Allow interior faucets to drip or trickle a steady small stream of water. Moving water doesn’t freeze as quickly or at all.
