Smoke Tree

Tree looks great! Mine has been potted for a couple seasons now. Anyone offer a suggestion to get these guys to smoke every year? Maybe a fert regimen? Something else? Thx.

From what I understand, don't prune.

Yes.

The leaves do tend to turn more green in the mid-late summer, but are this nice deep purple early.

I noticed my tree does that too
My guess is that the more shade the greener they turn to still be able to do enough photosynthese
I think this because my tree only the side with more shade or the inner parts turn green and not the sunny side

Shady(morning sun) side

Sunny (all day) side

Also this euonymus japonica works that way
The more sun the more yellow in the leaves and vice versa

Sandy,

I bought one of these today!

Great to have these tidbits!

Note sharing time!

Update?

Looks pretty much the same as the last pic I posted earlier this year except the leaves have a tad more greenish tinge to them.

When I lived in Wisconsin I found a balled/burlaped smoke tree on sale for $70. I was brutal on the root ball and cut the top back hard. Got the thing in a large, flat pot in one go. The tree responded really well. Back budding all over the place. I think these guys will take whatever you can throw at them.

Good info!

What do you think about cut paste?

Is this Browning and slight bleeding at cuts normal?

These are weird trees....
Haven't messed with anything like these.

That’s information I need to read. It just took me awhile to find it. Thanks @BrianBay9

So...yes...how are these purple smoke trees doing right now? You’re most of the way through your growing season.

Unfortunately I had to leave mine with friends in Wisconsin when I left. I don't have an update.
