Sick Seiryu??

Seiryu 7-8 yrs old. In the ground. Very healthy till now. NE Tx. Very hot and dry summer! What is this black stuff??

I'd cut off every bit of that black with sterile tools and burn the branches. Hopefully it didn't get too deep. Pick up all of the debris from the tree and move it somewhere else

I guess I’m cutting that tree down. The good news is, if the 8” trunk survives, I’ll have a heck of a bonsai starter.
