After posting my two virts, I got to wondering just how the first option -- with the semi-cascade branch -- might work out. So I fiddled a little more in Photoshop, and came up with this as one possibility. That lower-right branch might be better removed ...

Perhaps the most useful function of something like this is to whet people's thinking.

Thanks for the ideas Steve, they are really nice. I will think on these to go by if nothing happens this summer that looks promising. For now I think I will just move it outside for the summer and let it grow.
