I have a question to all people that have gravel under the benches.
Whats sort of stone is it ?
Im trying to finish my bonsai aera and has about 10m2 to cover with gravel, i was looking for very light gray color (something like zen garden)- chipping is my preference in around 14mm size. It seems to nearly impoissible to find something like that in Ireland in resonable price.
What stones would you pick? its going to be boarded with lawn.

Any help is much appreciate.

Make the rounds of vendors. Ask them what they have. Whatever else is true, rocks are strictly limited to local sources due to shipping cost limitations. Don't fall in love with something until you find that it is cheap and available near you. Very near you.

Ohh iknow all that and already did, seems to be very limited selection in Ireland, of course i can get a white granite or lime stone but price is 3 or 4 times more than normal stones. All colors failing into sort og gold/light brown
I guess i have to start loving light gold stones........

Hi- John Lord has what appears to be good looking stone in his garden youtube videos. You could check with him for costs and sources. What type of crushed stone is used for road bedding in your part of Ireland? Would it be suitable if you sifted it? And lastly, what is used for poultry grit there? Crushed granite?

Thanks for all advices,
I ned about 2 tones so sifting is no go, its a nice stone that is used on fireroads here but way to much work, its coming with a lot of dust or small particles.
Poultry grit i believe is crushed granite, but it looks like the light gold color is a way to go for me,

I hope its going to look nice with bonsai benches, im also trying to build small island in the middle of gravel with some small pine trees and other small plants.

If you do it yourself like I did, it’s going to be a lot of work. If you have someone else do it, it’s going to cost you. You have to decide which way you’re going to pay, or .

This is a simple bench I just put together. I'll replace the cinder blocks with wooden legs soon. I got most of the wood free from work. The long ones I found beside a dumpster screwed together like a stud wall without sheetrock. I just unscrewed them and reused everything to build this. It turned out to be the perfect number of screws I needed without having to buy anything!

It’s designed to double as a counter top/bar/lounge seating area: if we have guests I’ll take the plants down. (I’ve learned that high density urban life requires compromise) Bar stools are on order.

When it gets scorching hot in the summer I’ll hang shade cloth on the pergola

It’s built to match the herb garden I built last year.

Thanks! I’m very happy with how it all came out.

Inside the box: I had just emptied, refreshed and watered my potting mix in the raised garden. The floating perlite made it look extra white (and I added a little too much).

Dimensions? I forgot to add an object for scale! I believe the box itself is 24” Wide x 72” long x 12” deep. With the legs it stands around 28” high. I used the ‘square foot gardening’ technique to cram it full of veggies and herbs last year, the size worked well enough.

In the bottom of the box 2x6’s run perpendicular to the length of the box, gapped about 4” apart and mounted at a slight tilt (louvered) for drainage. The gaps are covered with hardware cloth then fiberglass screen.
