Shohin K Hornbeam, 11 years in the making for Fall.

The plants I have are too young/small to be sure. But what I observed during this first growing season is that the C. coreana seemed to produce shoots that had more of a horizontal and zig/zag growth, whereas the C. turc. seemed to grow more vertically. The fall color was an obvious difference. Now that the leaves have dropped, the buds on the C. turc appear larger. I didn't notice much difference in the leaf size/shape.

Not sure whether these difference will persist as the plants grow. Hopefully others who've grown both for longer periods can speak to that.

Lots of fertilizer in Sept. This is when it goes thru its second spring and it takes up a lot of fertilizer during that 50 days. Then when the temps fall to the 50's for weeks at a time I set the tree in the middle of the lawn so its gets the full brunt of cold air on it. No other trees to cause wind shears, no shade cloth, no distracting yard trees.

Just cold air naked to the branches. Takes about two weeks to get the feel. I do the same with my big trident, but this year I didn't bother with a nice shot because I had all the squirrell damage to the nebari and I was in to the tree as far as saving the base rather than saving the canopy for a good fall shot. I took this while I typed the last.

Edit: looks kinda funny to have a large begonia with that good of blossoms on Nov. 13.

Thanks Al. Will try this next year with mine.

Very nice tree. You don't get any leaf color? Might be your weather conditions near the coast.

This process was done to a maple with a big base that needed to be scaled back for a pot.

Thanks Al for the pictures! On both you had success? Perhaps surrounding it with bonsai soil instead of sphagnum is a better medium.

X2 on the great pics. The pics of the layers are very helpful. Such clean cuts on those roots removing that bark. Thanks for sharing.

And beautiful tree.
