Winter watering yes, only when soil has dried. Spring watering, as needed. This tree usually dries in two-three days.

Jeez I’m really sorry. Whatever it is, it’s too late now sadly. It really doesn’t please me to say this but all you can do now is determine the cause and prevent it from happening again. How have you evaluated for the presence of mites? Usually a 60x magnification is needed. Don’t ever trust your eyes alone. Mites are BASTARDS!!. If you see no damage to the foliage or differences in damage delineated by young vs. old growth then it’s logical to assume a systemic cause of damage and not a fungus or pest. Most likely root rot.

When was it last repotted? Has all the compacted soil been removed from the centre of the rootball? What soil mix is it in currently and for how long? If no insects, then the questions becomes one of root conditions, routine care and or amount of work done at one time?
You have indicated your watering routine, however that does not address the question of the condition of the rootball. Often the pot appears to need water when the compacted centre has dried out to the extent it will no longer take up water, or even the opposite the edges dry and the centre remains too wet. Check the roots, the top is a reflection of their health if insects or disease is not evident.
