Shohin Chinese Elm

It is past its budding stage, leaves are open, which to me is a good sign.

In my yard, elms are early to bud, but take a long time to start growing for real. Then, all of the sudden it seems like they jump to action and start pushing.

@leatherback thanks. It did bud early, one of my maples has only just started to wake up and has 1 bud about to crack open. My other 3 maples are still sleeping. My berberis has also just started pushing a few leaves this week.

Should I start fertilizing the elm this week once it’s a month since repot?

Hi @SeanS
Firstly, nice going, following this thread.
Secondly, which area in Joburg are you from?
Lastly, is that newly planted moss, or has it been there for a while? I just can't seem to grow moss. I plant it, and it dies, trees are doing GREAT, moss, not so much.

@Nelis I’m in the Broadacres/Fourways area, are you in jhb?

It’s actually just chopped sphagnum that’s gone green, think it’s staying a bit too wet.

The tree is growing slowly, hasn’t really sent out any long extensions but I have to remind myself that I did some extensive root work so it’s probably stopped extending on top for a bit while it sets up some footage below the surface.

Just moved from Benoni to the Vaal. Will PM you some time.
Lol! We both started a thread recently on the same species, just different directions. Good luck with this one!

Repotted this little elm today. Root growth seems pretty decent for a year. There’s still a bit of a bald spot in the front of the tree, and the 1 thickish root I left last year got a lot thicker so I cut it back quite hard to the first division. I also made the plastic disk under the tree smaller by about 1/3 and pruned the roots back to the outer edge of the disk.

Forgot to get a pic of it finished off and watered in, I’ll post one up tomorrow.

I’m hoping the deeper pot will give me slightly better growth than I got this past year. It grew well but I feel it could have been better. I’ve pruned the primary branches that were thick enough back to the 1st or 2nd buds while leaving some of the thinner branches long to thicken some more.

I was digging the choice of material, since it has a Great primary start.

Right with the cut back, perfect too.

Thought about removing some of those buds.

Loved the "the root ball" pic, thinking that's a great start to a decent wide base.

Then got right scared at the "after reducing the roots" pic.

Thought I shouldn't post till you're done, and while typing the next post appeared.

I think this tree can live, but I believe Walter has taught us that, though this kind of massive root hacking is across the internet accepted, it is much better, faster, and easier to develop a great tree with less root work.

Good Beer! (The name)

Sorce, may I ask who Walter is please so I can learn from him. Thank you, Katie

Sorce, I know who you mean now, I'd watched a video of his garden and saw a post of his here. It made me laugh when I read on his Instagram page (He's now selling photos of his trees)...He's saying that he owns the copyright and that nobody can copy them. He's clueless!

This in fact is what both my husband and I do for a living and always have. We're photographers. Once he posts one of those genuinely mediocre images on Facebook they own it. They surely will not want it but he's truly clueless. He said he stopped blogging because blogs are no longer in style or something to that effect. Blogs are far more original than facebook and always will be. Blogs take more work and people creating content are actually doing something original. Adopting a mediocre format for the masses like FB or Insta will be over soon but people who blog are at least creating something and not just plugging in a photo or comments to a completely unoriginal medium.

It's funny to me that as controlling as he clearly is he thinks the ownership of his images are 'safe' on FB. He gave up the copyright to them as soon as they were posted. That's comical to me. If you read his wording it's far funnier. Please do so. He actually believes he's right.

He's clueless!
I would say it is you who is clueless.

Posting your images to FB does NOT give them your copyright. They MIGHT have some rights to display your pictures in their platform. But they are not theirs to do what they want
Walters pictures are used ALL OVER internet by sellers, compagnies and have even been used for packaging of bonsai articles. I would be hesitant to call his images "mediocre".

In fact, it would be nice to show a little bit of respect to @Walter Pall, who has had a huge impact on the European bonsai landscape.

FB and IG get millions of visitors each day, i dont see that slowing down anytime soon. theyre also free to use. post good content and people will flock like the masses. FB actually owns IG now, with rivals like ticktock emerging, FB and IG will continue to improve, and scale the platform, theyre so much more than a photograph sharing platform now. a small business can grow and scale by just using instagram and not even having a website or blog such is the power of the platform. im not sure how blogs run, but i think you have to do a lot to drive traffic to your page, as in paid ads and so fourth. with FB and IG the traffic is already there.

@Katie0317 The only thing better than Walter at Bonsai is Facebook at stealing your life and soul!

I would think, a tree as photoed to be seen well as a bonsai is a rather different and difficult subject.

We should have a contest for it!

I have tremendous respect for what's he's accomplished. His work blows my mind!

He does not understand photo copyright. That's what I was saying.

He's also saying blogging is outdated and I disagree. I respect people who take the time and make the effort to blog.

The images are mediocre from my perspective but it's what we've done for a living for many years and have made our mark. I don't need to defend that. If you like his photographs I think that's great. They're available to purchase so that may appeal to you.

I don't have a little bit of respect for his work I have tremendous respect for what he's accomplished but I think he may want to go over the fine details of copyright. It won't matter though. FB isn't going to be interested in bonsai.

Regarding FB's future I'm just guessing it will be replaced with something newer although it has such tremendous appeal to the masses it will probably stay for a good long while. I know people love it. I've never gone near it other than having my friends show me things which is what made me know for certain how much I disliked it.
