Shohin BC development

Pointless exercise Uncle? If you want a small BC then chop it down. If at the end it measured at 10 in or 12 in and great looking... who cares if it is not a shohin.
It is called bantering with the community. :D
It’s a lot more fun when people have a say.
When a tree is mangled in the woods, would Bonsainutters know?

How about this one?
Originally I was thinking 24” flat top but :)
It has a curvy base from the tap root that came from the left side. Countering that is a smaller that is still developing root. Flat chop will be at 1/2 of that Coke can.

Disagree with chop that low, would waste the natural movement. Maybe at the upper shoulder of coke can, then more taper/movement carved in. Just IMO from this one pic

You have a point. Onward to finding the next candidate.

Do you have any pics showing what this type of carving ultimately produces?

@johng has this tree as an excellent example.
As you can see, the wall on my tree is still very thick because I want to assure that the tips get plenty of support to grow. Once the top gets close to the size I want, the hollowing will be increased and the wall thickness will be much thinner.

Thanks.

If I choose that tree, all that pole will be gone if I chop at 2.5” and carve the angle out. It is pretty much an entire top build. From the first inch of the trunk. All I use would the the base.

@Cadillactaste I’ve been looking but it is not easy to find a small gnarly one. That is why I am toying with the idea of a complete top build.
I agree with Cady. IMO Best to start with one with a strange launch. You'll find it.
