My shohin coast live oaks in development

These are great, Brian! I know these aren't collected trees but do you have any experience collecting Coastal Live Oak? I've got a couple I'm planning on collecting soon. I was hoping you had some information on improving their chances.

My collected ones are here https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/collecting-2020.41813/

This is my first time collecting though, so I'm probably not the right person to ask for advice, at least until we see if these live.

Really nice bark beginning to form...especially on the first tree photograph. How thick is that trunk in the first photo?....jthe diameter ust above that exposed root would help me understand more. If possible.

The first one is a little thicker than my thumb. Pen in the pic for scale. The two that have rough bark may or may not be Q agrifolia. They seem a little different. Could be Q wislizeni. I'm told most of the Calif red oaks hybridize so it's really hard to get a definitive ID.

Thank you. A cork oak I had was evergreen and mostly did not shed. I left leaves for same reason tree was evergreen. Photosynthesis and appearance;).
I cut off the old leaves, but keep the new ones. And, I cut back. You can defoliate, I suppose, but there’s no benefit that I know of.

I just like the look of all fresh, spring growth after getting rid of the ratty looking leaves. Q agrifolia around here tends to get lots of leaf damage in fall from insects, fungus, etc. I have a forest full of ALL their pests a couple of blocks away. Q suber leaves are still looking good.

Nice. Thanks Brian. Those look like great material. I hope that they make it.
It looks like you planted them in straight pumice. I'm planning on doing the same. Did you keep any native soil? Did you get a lot of roots? Also, I see that you trunk chopped them. I've heard some people say defoliate at collection and others say don't. What is your take on this?

Yes, 100% pumice. The soil I'm digging in is so loose and sandy that it really wasn't around to remove when I got home. I dug down to find the first set of lateral roots and cut just below that. In this area that was about 6 inches below the soil line. So all of them have some roots, but not a lot. Yes, I was advised to defoliate so I did almost complete defoliation. I left a leaf or two on some limbs. Those went brown and fell off on their own, mostly. Almost all the trees have started to bud out so I'm extremely hopeful. I'll let you know how it goes.

I really like these trees! Unfortunately we do not have this species in Europe. Would you ship Acorns overseas?

I didn’t see Switzerland on their exclusion list:

I’ve bought from them and they were great.

I guess in covid times it's not recommended to order overseas. I had ordered ultimate at ninelife.be. It was shipped from US. The small package (4 pounds) arrived after 7 weeks.. Your seedling wouldn't survive this.

Thanks a lot for the tip! I will try that after COVID.

Thanks for the info! I will try to order the acorns if I find a provider, they should survive the long shipping.

This great coast live oak forest at the old Ft Ord is a 10 min walk from me.

Remembering basic and advanced training there 1966 was not fond of the place. Dust, poison oak, fire ants, Platoon sergeants made very hard to appreciate great oaks. Would like to go back and hike there sometime now. Never believed possible to feel that way😖.
